today i read Jun's quiestion about'could' first time;.(honestly i didn't notice there have been that many topics on the page;;)
and i want ask something today.
i hear sometimes people say "Could be" or "It could be." what's the defference between "can be"? and what's the meaning? is it like 「それもありだね。(ありえるよね。)」? does anybody know that?
ne. Actually I've been wondering if there isn't really "particular event" use of "could."
We were convinced that "could" is always used as katei-hou or suiryou in koutei-bun, right?
However, in Moulin Rouge, Satine says "I couldn't pretend any more." It's not katei-hou, right? They are talking about a paticular event at a particular time.
But, in that case Haruna suggested, it is a suiryou use, I guess. All auxiliary verbs can be used to say that there is possibility for it to happen. I mean, WILL, WOULD, CAN, COULD, SHALL, and SHOULD have the same use while they have own meaning (can: be able to, will: are going to etc) each.
So here, you can use "It can be" instead of "Could be."
Does it agree with what you understand, guys? If you take kinou-hanchuu. I don't have a confidence...
oh, やっぱりdo we have to use "it can be" and "it could be" differently like polite and casual situation? so you guys mean "it CAN be" is for casual situation like between us, right?
