THE LOWER SENSES AND THEIR IMPORTANCE IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT
Parent Evening with
Dr Patricia Weltz, DO
Friday, April 3rd, 7.00pm – 8.30pm
Rudolf Steiner is unique in describing the development of four “lower senses”―the senses of life, touch, movement and balance―during the first seven years of life. He tells us how these lower, body-based senses are essential for a child’s later development of the “higher” capacities needed for attention and learning.
In this talk Dr. Weltz will take us on a journey into the world of the four lower senses, looking at their origin and their higher purpose. She will describe what happens when they are not completely formed or integrated during the first seven years. She will also demonstrate some simple games that parents can play with their children to strengthen the lower senses so that they can be free for classroom learning. These games are appropriate for children in the first seven years as well as for older children who may need some remedial help for the development or integration of their four lower senses. Even adults whose relationship to the physical body was not well supported in childhood can benefit from these enjoyable activities!
Dr. Patricia Weltz is an Osteopathic and Anthroposophical Physician, whose interest in child development began with the birth of her first child. During medical school she was introduced to Waldorf education and to her teacher and friend Dr. Susan Johnson, an Anthroposophical Developmental Pediatrician in Sacramento. Dr. Weltz currently works with children in her medical practice in Los Altos, Berkeley and Sacramento.
