”Not only...but also ”
Recorded: 27/Nov/1966
Transmitted by: BBC2 B&W 26/Dec/1966 (9pm-9:50pm)
John's second appearance on Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's comedy show was an acting role in a sketch in which Lennon played Dan - the doorman of a trendy nightclub "The Ad-Lav" situated in an underground men's lavatory!
John was filmed with Cook (cast as an American TV presenter) outside the entrance of the Gentlemen's public convenience on Broadwick Street (close to the junction with Berwick Street in the Soho area of London) one quiet Sunday Morning in November. The interior footage was shot, without John, a few weeks later.

Lucy in the Sky With Diamondsが出来たのだそうです。
Ad Lab Club

HJP [Voice over]: This Is London's most fashionable lavatory spot. Here film stars rub shoulders with royalty in an atmosphere of cosmopolitan sophistication.
[HJP walks into shot and greets the commissionaire.]
HJP: Good evening.
JOHN LENNON: Excuse me sir, are you a member?
HJP: I'm sorry, I'm not. I'm from American television. I'm doing an interview downstairs.
JL: I'm sorry, sir, you must be a member to get In here.
HJP: Would it help if I told you that I was the Duke and Duchess of Windsor?
JL: Oh, sorry, sir, I didn't recognise you, madam. Well, actually there is a five pound waiting list.
HJP: I understand. [Gets out wallet] This is one the, er, blue ones, isn't it?
JL: Aye.
HJP: Thank you very much indeed. I love your Oxford accent.
JL: [Taking money from HJP]: Lovely Follow your nose, sir.
HJP: Thank you.
JL: and madam.
[HJP goes down the stairs and emerges in The Ad Lav Club. It is a vast public convenience with cubicle doors along one wall and stand up pissoirs and basins along another. The walls are decorated with dark drapes and In the centre of the room sits DANDRUFF (DM) in a white suit sitting at a white piano. DRUFF tinkles some light background music away on the ivories as his customers do the same down the toilets. HJP enters and goes over to Druff.]
HJP: Good afternoon. I'm Hiram Pipesucker and I'm from Idaho television.
DAN DRUFF [Cockney boy made good voice]: Oh, and welcome to The Ad Lav Club, sir.
HJP: Thank you very much. You must be Mr. Druff.
DD: That's right. Call me Dan.
HJP: Thank you very much. Dan, that was beautiful music I beard on my way down here.
DD: Er, a bit of Handel.
HJP: Really? Very appropriate Indeed.
DD: I should say.
HJP: Now, Dan The Ad Lav Club: Tell me what gave you the kooky Idea of starting a sophisticated lavatory spot for real lovers of the lav?
DD: Well, I'm glad you asked me that, Hiram, because about four years ago I spent a very boring five minutes in a government sponsored public convenience. And I thought to myself, looking around, I thought: This is tatty. This is absolutely... ghastly. So, I thought as I looked around, I thought: The writing's on the wall for the old lay, the old style of lav. [ ... ] We need a more razzmatazz approach, you know, razzmalav if you like. So I bought up these premises and, er, did them up elegantly, and the first night I had ten thousand members hopping in the street waiting to get in.
HJP: Quite an achievement, Dan. And who are your regular members, in fact?
DD: Well, of course, not to mention any names, er, The Rolling Stones, Lord Snowdon and Alf Ramsey pop in for a quick one now and again.
HJP: What do you think is the particular attraction of your spot? What makes It so attractive to these fashionable people?
DD: Well, Hiram, I think when people go out to the lav they want something special, something they wouldn't get at home, y'know? I mean, for instance, I think the decor is very important.
HJP: It's beautifully done here. It's certainly very lavish, the decor, these curtains which're very beautiful.
DD: I think... I think it's worth the trouble. You see, a person can have a certain amount of privacy and, of course, the atmosphere is something special down here. And fast but not least, on top of It ail, is myself, the genial host.
HJP: I think the host is very important in a place of this nature and I believe that you in fact vary your lavatory music to suit the member as he comes down you gear your music to suit the Individual taste and moods of the members.
DD: That's quite right, actually. Whenever Noel Coward pops down I always break into a [Sings.] "A Room With A Loooo." 'E loves that, he's tickled pink. And, of course, Sir Laurence Olivier come down'ere after his triumphant first night in Othello, so I swung straight into a “Black Bottorn".
HJP: Very appropriate. Now, Dan, do you find In any way that you've been affected adversely by the credit squeeze? I know that businessmen up and down the country have been forced to take drastic slashes.
DD: Well, not really, no, I Hiram. Actually I'm hoping to expand. I'm hoping to open branches up and down the country, in fact by 1970 I hope to be in control of a huge lavatory chain.
HJP: [To camera]: A gigantic lavatory chain, an enormous lavatory chain stretching across Great Britain is the exciting prospect held out by Dan Druff here in the heart of Cockneyland here in The Ad Lav Club.
DD: Excuse me a moment.
[Goes to one of the cubicle and bangs loudly on the door.]
Come on, number nine, your times up!
HJP: Dan, I was wondering, If you have a moment could you show me a little more of your beautiful city?
DD: Yes, I think we've got a couple of minutes before the evening rush. I don't see why not.
[HJP and DD sit side by side at the piano keyboard.]
DD: Hold tight then.
HJP: Thank you very much.
[As they talk the piano begins to move forward taking HJP and DD with it.]
DD: Ding ding. Right ho, here we go.
[DD and HJP drive the piano out of the toilet and along London streets accompanied by the Goodbyee tune played In a Dixieland/ Hal Roach film kind of way. Soon the piano is out of the city and motoring along some country lanes. However the piano gets stuck on a level crossing with a train heading towards it. HJP and DD climb on to the piano lid, erect a push pull lever from a railway bogey truck on the top and are chased into the distance by the approaching locomotive. THE END.]

Utazo,

Thank you for providing this sketch! I have 3 cd's and a dvd of Derek and Clive but had never scene this one.

Aside from Peter Sellers there will never be anyone funnier than Derek & Clive.
Hi Mista Momi,

Thanks for your message. I'm glad you like it.
I think this is one of the most splendid sketches ever they made, and ashame on Yoko Ono's attitude to hide this to the public. She may never know we even appreciate John Lennon for appearing such funny comedy sketches. (there is another sketch with Lennon, but no lines.)

There are so many hidden sketches by Cook& Moore, as well as erased by the BBC. (shameful too)
I hope more sketches to be appeared on YouTube soon.
I met one of dudley moore's former wives in los angeles and she told me he had banned the derek and clive material in the us for a long time because he was ashmed of it. I think it was his finest work.

There is a rather good but sad film about peter cook and duley moore called "Not Only But Always." Rhys Ifans is phenomenal as Peter Cook. I say sad because apparently Peter Cook was quite abusive towards Dudley Moore.

What is your favorite Derek & Clive sketch?
There was a TV programme called 'Real Derek & Clive' on Christmas time in 3 years ago. It also revealed how much Moore ashamed them in his later yers, as he already became a Hollowood Star, what Peter wanted but never be. (many writer mentioned this point)

It is ovbious to watch his attitude on "Get the Horn" DVD. He seems he tried to make it rubbish.

"NOB Always"> Two wives stated that many details are so different. I read two interviewes of Wendy Cook, and Lin Chong on The Times or The Observer just before and after the programme waas broadcasted, but only found these.

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,6903,855997,00.html

P&D's relationship seems rather unusual, but now people said, Peter really loved Moore, than anyone, include his wives.

It is difficult to say what's my most favourite D&C sketch.
But I really laughed at "The Worst Job I Ever Had" and "The Worst Job He Ever Had", because I thought I knew worst jobs in the world, but they actually weren't!! Awful.
