Would anyone be interested in helping a Vegan sugar research project?
Fact: most sugar in Japan is not Vegan (white sugar). It is filtered through charcoal made from animal bones, e.g. meat bones, imported from India etc.
Therefore, other foods which use white sugar are not strictly speaking Vegan.
In order to make a directory of Vegan foods, and promote Vegan food standards and food production, we need to know which sugar is safe and which is not.
• Is anyone interested in helping in a research project to find out which sugar is and is not Vegan and to encourage companies to produce Vegan sugar?
This would require telephoning or writing to sugar production companies and documenting their responses.
OMG I did not know that. I am living in Germany but when i go back to japan I would love to help you out to find out.....Or Did you already find out? if you do i will try to let more people know about the result so the Company using the animal product will have to stop soon.

Thank you for your interest and bringing back to life this thread.
It is not a big job to begin with but it needs to be done quite professionally. The companies do not think they are doing anything wrong. If they are not criticised, and if we can offer them alternatives and good publicity instead of criticism, I think they might change quicker. Please circulate.
We need to find out which brands of sugar are vegan and which are not. Then we can trace all the commercial products which use non-vegan or non-vegetarian sugar. It is crazy, we cannot tell which foods are and are not vegan at present.
I am including a proposed questionnaire in English if you can translate it. My Japanese is not good enough. Does any list like it already exist?
I believe traditional black sugar and Muso beat sugars are safe but do not know 100%.

Japan produces two types of sugar - beet sugar and cane sugar. Beet sugar production is done mainly in Hokkaido while cane sugar production is located in Okinawa and the islands of Kagoshima. Domestically produced sugar meets about one quarter of domestic demand and the rest is imported. The nation is a highly visible country in the world sugar market because of its high demand for imported sugar. Approximately 80% of its sugar is from beet. Unrefined or "black sugar" is commonplace, as are raw sugar imports from China, Taiwan and other Pacific Islands.
Retail sugar prices are about 80% higher than U.S. prices, and wholesale prices more than double U.S. levels reducing consumption. The government also effective sponsors the HFCS industry, see below.
Japan is the world’s fifth leading importer of sugar and domestic sugar production has been declining since the 1990s. Its domestic sugar accounts for less than 0.5% of the world's crop. Okinawa produced sugar decreased by 25 percent from its 1995 high, Kagoshima produced sugar has declined 13.3 percent. South Africa and Cuba account for about 16.1 % of total Japanese imports. Australia and Thailand aggregate about 79 percent of all Japanese sugar imports. Fiji and the Philippines export small amounts of sugar to Japan.
Sugar consumption has also been steadily declining over the last twenty year period. To protect domestic producers and consumers from wide price fluctuations, a government policy measure aimed at stabilizing sugar prices was introduced in 1965. This policy, which is still in effect, hinges on administered prices which are determined annually by the Ministry of Agriculture and its Agriculture and Livestock Industries Corporation by a parity method. Under this, the cost of living in rural areas and farm input prices are taken into account. It also limits the total amount of cane sugar under production.
One common vegan and vegetarian concern about refined sugar is that it is refined through charcoal made from animals bones, thereby making it non-vegan. In general, charcoal made from animals bones is rare in Japan due to the lack of large meat industry and plant based charcoals are far more common.
Having said that, at current it is not know if there has been a review of Japanese sugars from a vegan or vegetarian point of view, nor how much of imported sugars are made in this way. Although almost 100% of Japan sugar imports are raw, countless ready made foods contain pre-treated sugars
Japan only has about 26 cane refineries on Honshu which produce the majority of sugar..
Bone char is charcoal made from burnt animal bones. Most cheap imported bones from India. It is not a technical requirement of making sugar. The decision is about profits.
Bonechar from India and China etc is cheap.
Alternatives
Japan also produces a number of entirely natural and traditional malt syrups, e.g. rice syrup, corn and barley malt syrups. Arguably, due their more complex carbo-hydrate nature, these are better for one's health than table sugars and less sweet.
Sweet, unsugared fermented rice products, such as amazake, are also common.
Some artificial sweeteners have been banned as a result of strict food additive regulations.
HFCS
High-fructose corn syrups (HFCS) comprise of a group of corn syrups that have undergone enzymatic processing to convert their glucose into fructose and which has then been mixed with pure corn syrup (100% glucose) to produce a desired sweetness. The consumption of High-fructose corn syrups (異性化糖 or いせいかとう), a Japanese inventions, is on the increase.
Made in Japan from imported maize, there also known as:
ブドウ糖果糖液糖 dextroglucose fructose liquid sugar, aka HFCS 42 (used in most foods and baked goods; approximately 42% fructose and 58% glucose)
果糖ブドウ糖液糖 fructose dextroglucose liquid sugar, aka HFCS 55 (mostly used in soft drinks)
高果糖液糖 high fructose liquid sugar, aka HFCS 90 (= 90% fructose, 10% glucose)

Stevia
In the early 1970s, Japan began cultivating Stevia (アマハステビア or amaha sutebia) as an alternative to artificial sweeteners such as cyclamate and saccharin, which were suspected carcinogens. A member of the chrysanthemum (Asteraceae) family, the plant's leaves, the aqueous extract of the leaves, and purified steviosides are used as sweeteners. Morita Kagaku Kogyo Co., Ltd produced the first commercial Stevia sweetener in Japan in 1971 and the Japanese have since been using it in food products, soft drinks (including Coca Cola), and for table use. Japan currently consumes more than any other country, stevia accounting for approximately 40% of the sweetener market.
Biotechnology
"Roundup Ready" biotechnology-enhanced sugar beets have been introduced from the USA to Japan and do not require labeling by law.
Artifical sweeteners
I cannot recommend any artificial, chemical sweeteners such as sorbitol or aspartame as, personally, I do not consider them food and they are used almost entirely in junk foods to mislead people who think sugar is "bad".

The trick is to be polite, friendly, non-judgemental and helpful where possible.
Using the "allergy" excuse is quite a good trick ... but it is also a good opportunity to do vegan outreach! It would be useful to have some business like leaflets printed out before hand, not typical kawaii or AR type information, so info packs can be sent out to the businesses afterwards.
I have good contacts with the original Vegan Society in the UK and elsewhere in Europe and so can get ideas of materials and information from them.
