does anyone know any websites where there are many articles, journals, or stories that is suitable for intermediate Japanese language learner to read to improve their Japanese reading skills?
I learn Japanese by myself, since I don't have time to take classes, I thought reading will be the way for me to improve Japanese.
I don't know if this is any help but Nipponia is an
online magazine with articles in a variety of languages.
Below each section there is a button that will give you
Japanese text.

There is a book called "Read Real Japanese" which has
articles by famous Japanese writers. On the facing
page is an English translation of some of the key phrases.
Hi.
I just wonder how did u guys study japanese first?I mean really beggining.
Coz my BF(OZ) is coming to japan on new years but he doesn't speak at all.Knows just 'ARIGATO'. And he wants to learn easy conversation befor he comes japan and see my family.
Was my bad I didnt use japanese at all when i was in OZ.Also if i teach him some sentence, its hard to remember that to him.Its because he doesn't know the basic japanese,I guess.
So i just want to know how did u guys study basic? At the school? From Hiragana or start from speak sentense?
I have no idea where should he start..
I've self taught myself through watching Japanese Television and buying a few Japanese book.
Teach him hiragana at the start, and general particle / grammar structure. That way he will learn how to form sentences. If he can, buy some Japanese textbooks which he can learn from and practice. A good one to use is called Mirai. There is a textbook and work book.
It teaches reading, writing, and culture.
But reading and writing go hand in hand, like speaking and listening do too. So talk to him and introduce him to new questions every day, if he hears the same question or words enough he will be able to pick up what is being said or asked.
It may not be easy to do at the start, but once he gets into the swing of it it'll be fine.
I found that I learn alot more when I'm in Japan than when I'm not in Japan. He should be fine.
I strongly suggest against getting a Japanese girlfriend for the purpose of learning Japanese for the same reason you wouldn't buy a bird to learn how to fly: neither are teachers, and the purpose for having either is spurious at best; they will catch on.
Imagine this is you: you want to find male Japanese language exchange partners if you are a guy. You have to find some (maybe on mixi, or with an ad), and you want to study and/or be friends with them and spend hours studying together. If this thought makes you chagrin, then you might just want a date and not really to study. Try this little thought experiment and see how you react.
Humble advice: find a native-English-speaking girlfriend who fulfills you, and then like going to the gym, bowling, dance lessons or what have you, find a guy language exchange partner. Good luck.
Do you live in Japan? If so, then join in the Japanese class run by volunteer in your ward. Check your ward office website. Easy way to learn the language and the customs of japanese.
シャ〜プ, #21, I like your words. Same applies on japanese girls as well. Saw too many examples that girls got a bf for the purpose. Learning a language is more a self-motivated thing. Learning itself should come first.

Kanji is actually easier for me than hiragana, but that's a good site, I can always improve my kanji

this is the first website I used to begin studying Japanese, i think its a very good site for beginners

I start learning Japanese by studying hiragana and katagana first, like how to pronouce each word and how to write them
then I start memorizing basic vocabularies, have to make a goal on how many vocabularies to memorize in a day
next study basic grammars, it is a must
then you can go on practice listening and speaking

I think i have to agree with you, especially for beginners and intermediate learners, it is very hard to learn from friends or girl-boy-friends, but if you're in advance-level, it is very good way to help practice your japanese: listening and speaking etc. But i won't discourage anyone from making Japanese friends early on, for me one reason to learn a new language is to make friends from different cultural background, and it is interesting to learn how we're different. And also friends will give you encouragement to keep improving Japanese. :)
