This coming week I have an interview for a job in Japan. The company asked me to do a web page who would use a complex kanji database to show my ability in Japanese web page creation and kanji manipulation, so I grabbed kanjidic2.xml database and putted myself at work to do a small game related to Japanese learning ^c ^.
You can play in 2 modes "hidden" or "translate". In hidden mode you must match the kanji with the same figure, this will help you to memorize and remember the kanjis. In translate mode you must match up the kanji with his english translation.
I still have some days ahead so I will add the ON and KUN readings and some other stuff in the web page. If you find a bug or trouble please write me about it, also if you think of something to improve the game or other games using kanjis or japanese please tell me.
i just tried it out, and im using safari (on a mac) as a browser. Although you did specify that it only worked for explorer and firefox, i could use the "translation" game just fine, but it was really hard to click the buttons on the "hidden" game.
im still learning japanese so i could see myself using the translation game a lot, i think its great! But i think to really help me undersand the kanji well, i would like to know how to say the kanji as well as know what it means. For instance: you used the kanji 車、and had the english of "car", but it might be good to include "kuruma" or "くるま” with the english label also. I dont know how hard it would be to add it in, since you're using databases. But other than that i liked it a lot, very cool!
Thank you, this is wonderful! I'm going to Japan soon, and this is an excellent, quick way to practice my reading. ^^ Which I really need to do. I agree it would be nice to add the Japanese if you can, but it's still a great, useful tool as-is.
thanks ^c ^ As for the difficulties of clicking the buttons I can't do much... I think there is firefox on mac also ? I can't truly test it on safari as I don't have mac, sorry T_ T
くるま would be the the KUN reading and しゃ the ON reading of 車 and yes I plan on adding the ON and KUN reading in hiragana and katakana but not in romanji sorry. I wish to add some small improvements and other games that use kanji (but I need to think of those games yet)
This is a good site. Gives good kanji recognition practice. It would be good if there was a memory game that matched the kanji with hiragana as well to help with reading.
yea sorry about that Drake, i totally missed that you said you're going to be adding the ON and KUN readings in your original message. I can't wait to try it out when its updated!
Marku > there is nothing to be sorry about, it's okay ^c ^
I have done a small update, putted Reading mode, and changed Translation to Meaning mode. Also I arranged a little the general presentation. Now the top scores tables are the only thing lacking, but I will do them in a far future. Currently I would like to try to make other games using kanji.
great game, thanks a lot!
in the explanation you there is a small mistake, for the play mode you wrote twice 'Meaning' but never 'Reading'. i know, it is just a small error but since it is for a job interview it might be worth to change :-)
if someone cannot solve it completely (like e.g. me), would it be possible to show the correct solution at the end of the game?
mir_g, ops small writting mistake... '-_ -
As for showing the answer that's kind of difficult...
In hidden mode I can show all the pieces without much trouble, but I don't see any real interest in doing so as the goal is to memorize and remember the kanji, so showing the kanji if you are game over will not help you next time you play the game.
On the other hand, in Meaning and Reading games it would be very interesting to show the answers, that way you can check and try to learn from the mistakes, but I'm unsure how could I do this...putting different colors maybe ? it could be an improuvement for the game, each time you click on a kanji and find it's pair it will not always took green color, but other colors as well, that way you can know wich one it's his pair, but there would be 28 different colors on the board, so it will be a little messy...humm, maybe I could put an option to put colors or use a single color depending on the wish of the user... humm, don't know.
I was thinking about trying to do a kanji groups game, it would be complex to do, but fun, a programmers small chalenge :D The game would show you a collection of 4 kanjis and you must choose the intruder, for exemple:
Can you guess in each group which one is the intruder ? the 1st and 2nd would be easy level, the 3rd hard level and I would put the 4th in expert mode ;)
I still need to do some score tables to keep the points and make some statistics ^c ^ it would be very encouraging if the system was able to keep your scores and you could check your progresion over time.
Nope, but it interest me that CJK institute position... can you send me some info ?
As for the interview for the work in Japan it wasn't at all what I expected, the company didn't look serious at all, the interview was way too informal and the job looks doubtful... :(
