大切な日本のファン、もうすぐ私の友達になる皆さんへ

日本で多くの人がさらされている状況を想像することもできません。地震と津波のニュースがあった夜、私の心は沈み込みました。涙を流しながら報道を見て、自分が無力である事を感じていました。ここアメリカにいる多くの人が同じ気持ちです。赤十字に寄付をしたり、震災の最新情報はできるだけ確認してきましたが、実際に役に立つことをしている様には思えませんでした。だから私達が直接連絡がとれて、色々話したいことが言える場を作ってくれたベン・フォールズに感謝します。

日本にはまだ行った事がありません。５月に来日する予定があるので指折り数えて待っています。今回が初めてなので知っている人に日本での経験を聞いて回っているのですが、本当に夢のような、すてきな国のようですね。地方の素晴らしい美しさ、都市部の豊かな歴史とあふれるエネルギー、どこより楽しい買い物や世界一のおいしい食べ物…でもこの中のどれよりも私が人から聞いたのは、日本人の素晴らしさについてです。日本人は、親切でいつでも支えてくれる、愛情あふれる、楽観的かつ充実した日々を送っている人々だと聞きました。

今、私には日本人のそういう資質が見えます。日本人の美しさ、楽観性、すばらしい強さ、そして愛を見ることができます。それはここカリフォルニアにいても見えますが、これから初めて日本に行って直接日本人のすばらしさに触れる事ができるのを楽しみにしています。日本の皆さんと初めて生で音楽を共有する事も楽しみですが、ボランティアとして私にできる事なら何でもしようと思っています。いつでも皆さんの事を想い、祈っています。日本の皆さんは愛されているという事を知っておいて下さい。皆さんからのコメントを楽しみにしています。考えている事やエピソード、写真、遠く離れた場所からの援助方法についての意見…言いたい事は何でもこのページに書き込んで下さい。あなたがどこにいようと、私たちは必ず耳を傾けている事を知って下さい。

To my dear Japanese fans and soon-to-be friends,
I cannot begin to imagine what many of you must be going through right now. My heart sank to the floor the night we were informed of the Earthquake and then Tsunami. And I watched the news with tears in my eyes, feeling as many of us do here in the states: totally helpless. I have done the donating to Red Cross, and keeping up to date as much as possible with the status of the disaster, but nothing has really made me feel like I'm actually making a difference. That's why I am so grateful to Ben Folds for putting this forum together so we can actually connect, and give voice to so many of you who have so much to say.

My first trip to Japan hasn't happened yet. We are scheduled to come in May and I have been counting the days. Because I've never been there before I've been asking everyone I know to tell me about their experiences in Japan. I must say, it sounds like a magical, magical place. I have heard about the incredible beauty of the countryside, the rich history and energy of the cities, the unbeatable shopping and the best food in the world..... but most of all I keep hearing about the people. The most kind, supportive, loving people who have so much life and optimism.

I see that in you now, Japan. I see your beauty, your optimism, your great strength and your love. I see it from here, in California, but I can't wait to come see it in person for the first time. I just can't wait. I look forward to sharing music face to face for the first time, but I also look forward to volunteering, spending time doing whatever I can to help. You are constantly in my thoughts and prayers, and know that you are loved. I look forward to hearing from you....this page is a place for you to share your thoughts and stories, photos, ideas on how we can help from so far away...whatever it is that you want to say. Please know that wherever you are, I promise we are listening.
