■INTERVIEWER
OK I think You know with you and Orienthi and Paul Reed Smith it's like Santana old home week or something
■NEAL
Yeah you know it's becoming like that. you know There's a long broad spectrum of time that's gone by and a lot of music that's you know stuck to the wall. And so it's awesome yeah.
■INTERVIEWER
Well my guest is Neal Schon who played with Santana and of course Journey and we're gonna why don't you bring us up to speed on what you've been up to lately.
■NEAL
Well you know I did We we toured the world last year with Journey with the success of our our record You know with Arnel. And so I got home about four months ago and I'm actually just taking some time off. But I'm going into writing like in another couple weeks and we're writing a new Journey record. And I'm supposed to go in in April and record the record. And it should be painless like it usually is you know come out of nowhere kinda come out of the sky. I kinda have a concept of what I want to go for and. I really feel like I've talked to everybody in the band about it like Jonathan the other writer and we we kind of have a focus about what we're going to go after. And we really don't I don't think we need any more AC AM hits. We have like our whole catalog that we have to absolutely play otherwise people throw things at us. And so I see no need anymore in continuing like repeating the same type of you know songs to try to get on the radio. There is no radio it's iPods. You know So you know I talked about the concept with Jonathan and I think he he you know we're we're on the same track now.
I want to go after a conceptual record I think that you know our audience is completely ready for that from this band because we can be very musical when we want to be. And you know you just have to write the material that caters to that. And so you know I have a conceptual idea about the write... how to write the whole record what it could could be about and that's the hardest thing to find is the one thing you're going to write about and the subject matter And so the subject matter is so important when you do something like this so it doesn't come out hokey or it doesn't come out cheesy. It's gotta be something more deal...deep and real. And so I think I've found that but I'm not gonna lay it on you cuz then someone else will steal it. I think it's too good.
But You know besides that I came down here and I'm you know Paul Reed is has always been a great friend of mine we've gotten reacquainted lately. And so you know things just kinda go around they come around and they end up where they're supposed to be naturally. And I love Paul's style because he's a you know he's a no BS guy. And he's really in it for for the guitars and his amplifiers and the sound. And he's it it he's in it for real. He's not just a businessman that's running a company that wants to take advantage of everybody that's in the company. He's into taking care of his artists. He gave me. Like I'm like kinda blown away still but I ordered I got on the phone with him about two months ago and I ordered four guitars from him custom like they built for me before sunk in Floyds and you know Fernandes Sustainers and and with all my stuff in it that I usually use and I said "So how are those guitars coming?" yesterday to him and he goes "They're done". And I go "In two months. They're done. That's like unheard of". And so I said "I'll send you a check" and he says "No no no no." and I was like "OK" then he goes "And also I have another present for you". And he said you wanna? He took me upstairs and had me listen to the new beautiful acoustic guitar and he goes "It's yours" And so like I was very moved to say the least and I have to actually write him a note but I think I'll just take him out to dinner you know before I leave here. So I'm I'm glad to be back over here you know I really came down here. I had a lot of different things going on with a lot of different companies that I was checking out and so far you know.
You know I do have one guitar that I'm going to reinstate. That I did years ago. It was a Schon guitar. And I don't really want to say who it's coming out with right now but they they brought me a custom prototype of it and it's pretty amazing cuz I was like pretty blown away with the playability the pricing the quality everything and so that'll be popping out here in a bit too. And I'm excited about that cuz I always thought it was a different design. And it......
■INTERVIEWER
Just to remind people. That's the one with the extended tail piece correct?
■NEAL
The extended tail piece is no longer there. Instead it's set up with a Floyd on it cuz I use Floyds all the time...just because it's not like I use the bar for dive bombs or anything. I like sliding into notes. But I do a lot of live playing and I can't be bothered with switching guitars every two songs or I don't have time to tune in between sets when we're playing big shows. And so I like being able to lock down when I'm on stage and I've just gotten used to it. and so yeah it's like that but it doesn't have a pick guard any longer and it's curly maple top but it's full mahogany body. A little bit bigger than a Les Paul and ebony finger board. It's nice.
■INTERVIEWER
So that's the independent project. But I just wanted to circle back to the story about getting reacquainted with Paul. Cuz you used to play PRS's exclusively.
■NEAL
I still do..Yeah I still do. And I probably will be again. You know I mean you know with him you know laying these guitars on me. He's like you know he goes I don't need a contract. I don't want to do a signature model. I just want to you know make you a great guitar and have you love it so that you play it. And I'm like I'm so down with that. I love that.
■INTERVIEWER
You know he's pretty sincere
■NEAL
He's very very sincere like no other man I've ever met from any other company. Yeah And I came down here. I played a party the other night. I put together a solo band for the first time cuz I have this actually besides doing a Journey record I'm gonna be working on a solo record .but we took the year off as far as touring. And so I decided that for the first time in my life that I'm going to go out under my name and not like another like Abraxas or Soul SirkUS or whatever. And you know I've got a lot of solo records out there and and people are really starting to pickup on my old records that that came out quite a long time ago. And it's sort of like they're like digging them now. And so I think it's really good timing to go out and play some of these majestic giant ballads that I've done. Much like you know Jeff Beck has been doing. You know And I'm like going I'm seeing people relate to it now and I'm going I think the time is right. And we had a good run you know the last couple of years really got me out in the forefront again you know TV wise and and playing a lot of shows. And so I'm going out. My son is playing with me. He's turned into a pretty amazing guitar player. He actually gave me a quite a run for my money the other night. (Laughs)
And I loved it you know. He was like you know he kept me on my toes made me want to go home and practice a little bit. But I have Marco Mendoza on base. And Prairie Prince from The Tubes original drummer actually Journey's original drummer playing drums. Keith Saint John on vocals he's been with Montrose most recently. And the guy just completely blew my mind when we went to we rehearsed for four hours the other day before the show we played the other night and crammed did a cram session. And we rocked. And It was it was great you know. It's gonna be really good. So Miles Schon, Me, Keith and Marco and possibly a keyboard player. We don't know who yet. Yeah.
■INTERVIEWER
Like You got a lotta stuff going on Neal.
■NEAL
I'm always busy. I'm gonna be like BB. I'm going to be one of those guys. I look up to Beck and BB you know. They never get old. and they just like. I mean you have to get old age wise but it doesn't mean you have to play old. Which is like a big difference you know. You see Beck every year and I go I'm flying over to London in February. I'm going to spend a whole month over there. I was seeing Brian May over there and I saw...ran into Jeff the other day and I'm gonna to see the two concerts that he's doing with Clapton.
■INTERVIEWER
Well that sounds great. Neal Schon thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us.
