Happy New Year to all! I hope you and your families had a great holiday, and wish you all the best for this year
My two year old daughter will enter kindergarten this coming April. I have a 6 month old baby son, and am so busy. When I was pregnant with him, my daughter Hannah went to the local 保育園 for four months, and she loved it. It was really hard for me at first to let her go, but after a while, it was really good for all of us. I had some time to relax, she had time to play outside and socialise with other children, and we spent great times together after her nursery time. Now that my son is no longer a newborn, and demands a lot of my time too, I feel that I can't provide as much as I would like for my daughter to get the most out of her days.
I haven't returned to work yet, and hope not to for about another year, so I was so pleased to find a kindergarten that has a 2 year old's class. We were invited to mochitsuki last week. Although I had got a good impression from looking around the kindergarten, I felt like a real outsider once I got into this kind of event. The mothers were all in a really tight knit group, and one of the teachers had said to me that I have to help out in about 3 events during the year. I didn't get a good impression from the other parents, but at the end of the day, my main concern is that Hannah is happy there, and that the teachers are good.
So my question is this, how much do you participate, are expected to participate, or do you think it is important to participate in nursery/school events?
In my case, every mom is expected to help out in at least one of the
school events. Nobody has ever said so but all the moms know this "rule".
I'm ok with the helping out thing, but I feel a bit isolated everytime
when there's a visit day/ PTA conference. I don't know the others but
in my son's preschool, all the moms sit around a circle and the teacher
starts passing some notes, then every mom has to read out the lines of
words one by one. I'm not good at reading Japanese, so everytime I feel
so nervous and when it's my turn, everybody looks at me and sees my name
tag and what on their face is a big "Oh". Besides, I don't like
the compulsory mommy meeting, either. They said it's not compulsory,
but the truth is you have to attend I think it's good for parents
to participate, but I prefer something like "let's do it", but not "Just
do it"
Ah, reading in turns sounds a bit freaky Almost like school for Mums!! If they expect me to do that, that will be a funny meeting indeed!! I think you have hit the nail on the head with "voluntary" meetings. There is a pre-kindergarten club at Hannah's nursery, and lots of optional events to attend, but I get the feeling they are not really optional, just as you say. In the U.K., being a member of the P.T.A. is optional, but REALLY optional Usually stay-at-home grand acheiver Mums are part of it. "Let's do it" would be good
