日英技術翻訳道場コミュの「仕様書」の訳語

こんにちは。

「仕様書」の訳語として、今まで"specifications"（複数形）、"specification document"、"specification sheet"を採用してきたのですが、もしかして単数の"specification"でもいいんでしょうかね？
ネットで調査すると、単数の用例がわんさか出てきます。「ビジネス技術実用英語大辞典」や「技術系英文ライティング教本」にも単数の用例が結構出てます。

以下のような説明もあるようですね。
"A specification is a document that specifies a system or product, e.g. a prime-item development specification for an F-14. There are lots of sections/content in a spec: requirements, definitions, reference documents, glossary, verification information, etc.

A requirement is a single statement of something the product or system must do. A spec may have hundreds of requirements in it. Old school methodology says the requirement statement must use the word "shall", to separate requirements from statements of facts, or definitions. (Not sure if the new-fangled agile kids keep to all this or not; the fastidiousness has it's use but is a little fussy at times.)

So a spec is a document full of requirements, plus some other supporting and ancillary information."

こちらのサイトでは、"specifications"（複数形）が訳語として挙げられています。

ネイティブ3人に質問してみたところ、意見が分かれました。。。

仕様書の作成経験があるネイティブは、"a specification" = "a document"とみなし、"This specification covers ..."などと書いていたとのことです。
他のネイティブは、"a specification" = "one thing that is specified"と認識しているようでした。

"a specification" = "a document"の場合、"specification"（仕様書）の内容として"specifications"（仕様の各項目）が含まれることになり、紛らわしいと思うんですけどね。。。

specification　と　specifications

明確な使い分けってあるのでしょうか？

国内外の例をみてもバラバラで、、、混乱してます

ある特定のひとつの事柄について、いろいろなデータがあるのはspecification?
複数の事柄についての詳細がひとつのチャートにあってもspecifications?

単数のときと、複数のときの使い分けが理解できず、頭かかえてます

ご存知の方いらしたら、ご教授ください

「ひとつの事柄」が何を指しているのか分からなかったのですが、“specify”されている数値などが複数あるのであれば、”specifications”（複数形）だと思います。

通常は”specifications”（複数形）だと思います。

例えば、以下の各項目が“a specification”（specifyされていること）を意味するはずです。

ページのタイトルが"SPECIFICATIONS"となっています。

なお、"a specification"（単数）が「仕様書（文書）」の意味で用いられることがある理由については、私もよく分かっておりません。個人的には、"a specification"（単数）に「個別の仕様（項目、数値）」と「仕様書（文書）」の両方の意味があると読者の混乱を招くと思います。
