"Teachers predict an exodus from Delia"
Liz Heron

Teachers at the trouble-hit Delia School of Canada are predicting a mass exodus of staff next year if it switches more teachers to one-year contracts.
The school introduced two-year contracts in September 2004, but switched back to one-year contracts for those who started last year, teachers say.
Teachers were told in the spring that all future contracts would be one year and said the majority, currently on tw-year contracts would have to swtich in September next year.
One teacher said: "We have been told that the school will only be offering one-year contracts from next September althoigh they have said pay won't be going down."
She said that the sacking of deputy principal Vaughan Blaney and assistant principal John Blaney in June and subsequent events at the school had left teachers shocked and demoralised and questioning their future.
"The Blaneys were very motivating people." she said. "You knew you had backing but now you don't have anymore. The mood is very sad and it is hard to be an effective teacher when you have such moor morale."
"It is dealing with an organisation that you have lost confidence in. The management have told teachers not to send any e-mails to them or anyone else."
Teachers can't leave at the start of this term becaus they would have to refund their signing bonus and airfares.
"It is the second week of term and everyone is already planning to go home at the end of the year. They usually don't talk about leaving until March. I expect that about 70-75 of the 80 teachers will leave at the end of this year. "
Barara Blaney, sister of the sacked brothers, who also had her contract as head of guidance terminated in July but has beenm reinstated as a civics, career studies and guidance teacher, said: "I know of more than 10 people who are preparing to leave the school at the end of the academic year. They are making plans and putting in applications for other jobs."
Nobody from the school was available for comment.
