Christianity in EnglishコミュのWhat do you think of atheist?

As some of you know, I'm not a fan of atheism. And some that I crossed on mixi are not too crazy about me eitherちっ(怒った顔)

Now if someone does not want to believe in God or they are agnostic, I respect that. I was once turned atheist for a period of my life, but I found God again and think that Jesus is, and not was, the greatest man to walk on earth.

But even when I used to be an atheist ten years ago, I still showed respect to Christians or anyone who had faith in God.

That's the point I'm getting to: I wish atheist would respect people's own right to believe what they want to believe. But it seems they are on a mission to convert people to their ideals and "non beliefs". It seems their credo is " Either you are with us or against us "

Now I'm not putting a label on them, but sometimes I wonder why they are so angry, disrespectful or smug when it comes to God.

Here are ten things I think about militant atheist:

1) They are judgemental

2) They are arrogant

3) They think they are all knowing

4) Think that anybody that believes in God is weak or disillusioned

5) They always talk about biblical inaccuracies, science, evolution as proving that God does not exist. Try to present your evidence that science shows there is an intelligent designer, that Darwinism has many gaps and flaws in it's theory, they scoff at you.

6) They say there the minority the least trusted in the US. Well, if they open their big mouths, put their garbage all over the Internet, and persecute other people's belief, makes you wonder why people don't really liked them.

7) They say that religion is the main source of war. Funny how they forgot to talk about political motives, money, nationalism being the cause of most bloodshed in the last century, more than two thousand years of christianity combined.

8) The famous question we usually hear from atheist is that if God exist, why does he allow, tsunamis, natural disasters, innoncent people dying, aids, cancer, etc.

9) They always try to give christianity a bad name while they try to look like the good guys and the voice of reason.

10) Militant atheist are hypocrites and liars. They are just as bad as the religious zealots that give christianity a bad name.

As I said, I don't hate atheist. I'm just saying how militant atheist can be dangerous and untrustworthy. They seem to enjoy causing stress and grief to good christians that had never did anything wrong to them. You can agree or disagree with what I said. I'm just curious to know what you think.

Have a good day everyoneウインク

Chris,

It seems you are treating all atheists as if they were 'militant atheists'(even though you mention militant before the list, you don't always). There is no single type of atheist, and there are some I have a deep affinity with, and respect for.

Now as to the militant type you mention, the wannabe dawkins of the world, I cannot stand them. So if you mean that sort mostly, then much of what you say is true.

Now to what you say:

1) They are judgemental

I would be careful of using this word, since it is not at all clear what it means. I suspect people usually mean it to be something like 'someone is making *strong* judgments without having the warrant to do so. How are you using the word?

2) They are arrogant

the militants, yes: but then so are many religious folk, including Christians. But yes, this sort thinks they are particularly bright (and others not) whether or not they really are (and many aren't). And they are epistemically arrogant too, in thinking to know things they do not.

4) Think that anybody that believes in God is weak or disillusioned.

Yes, but thats actually a crazy move because the question can really be turned back on them. They are their own heroes in their own narratives, and there is a lot of 'feel good' in their self-hero making. Plus, speaking of illusion: to believe the self is strong, is either deluded or
dishonest.

but there are many atheists and agnostics that recognize the problems in their own positions, and are honest about that, and they are to be commended.

5) They always talk about biblical inaccuracies, science, evolution as proving that God does not exist. Try to present your evidence that science shows there is an intelligent designer, that Darwinism has many gaps and flaws in it's theory, they scoff at you.

True, many do. But part of why they do is because of the silly ways Christians have talked and thought about the bible. Evolution doesn't prove a damn thing about whether God exists or not, but it has largely been Christians (in america) who tried to oppose them.

But again, the militant sort just use crass viewpoints to confirm what they believe, without really looking into the difficulties, and Christians do this too.
6) They say there the minority the least trusted in the US. Well, if they open their big mouths, put their garbage all over the Internet, and persecute other people's belief, makes you wonder why people don't really liked them.

The 'scoffing' is just a rhetorical move to dismiss the arguments without having to deal with it. For them, evolution *must* have no real ambiguities, and *must* somehow prove that God doesn't exist. But both things are quite mistake, and the rhetoric is just a way of avoiding serious thought on it--or they are so personally involved in it, it *has* to be right in they way they want to be, or they lose their identity.

7) They say that religion is the main source of war. Funny how they forgot to talk about political motives, money, nationalism being the cause of most bloodshed in the last century, more than two thousand years of christianity combined.

yeah, that 'religion is the cause of war' is just reductive, historical amnesia bullshit.

8) The famous question we usually hear from atheist is that if God exist, why does he allow, tsunamis, natural disasters, innoncent people dying, aids, cancer, etc.

That is a good question actually, but a lot depends on how honestly it is asked. If God doesn't exist, these things are no less a problem, and may in fact totally undercut the 'high view of human life' they want to hold.

Thanks for posting your opinion Ryan. I totally agree with you.

I just want to specify that I was not attacking all atheist ,but the militant atheist who attack anybody who believes in God. But I should have put more emphasis on that, so I apologise.

I too have many atheist friends which two of them are my best friends. We don't argue about who's right or who's wrong ; we don't force each other's opinion on others by saying God exist or doesn't exist. We just say whether we believe or not and why and that's it.
You have many good point of views Alex. You are right that some so called Christians act high and mighty by taking the Bible too literally. And because of this, they creep people out. I used to be sick to my stomach about a certain Christian branch that I found arrogant and annoying. They were Gideons, the ones that made sure bibles were in hotels. Too obssessed about heaven and hell, God and Satan.

To me, their mentality was "you are either with us or against us". So if someone was Jehoviah witnesses, Catholic, Mormon or any other religion in the world, they would not have eternal life and burn in hell.

That pissed me off. Maybe it's those so called Christians that made militant atheist disagree with Christianity, because they don't act so Christian when they tell how people should live or how to get into the kingdom in heaven or threaten them with eternal damnation.

As I said Alex, I'm not putting all atheist on the burning stick here. They are many atheist who are for Jesus, who are positive and have morales.

But it's the militant atheist that act as bad as the Christian fanatics. As I said, if they don't want to believe in God, God love them anyway. But they should not judge us because our beliefs are different to theirs.
One more thing Alex, I did not want to transmit the message that all Christians are good and all atheist are bad.

As I said, I agree with you that everybody in any category can be judgemental, atheist and Christians. And maybe the fact I call militan atheist judgemental makes me just as bad.

I don't think that just saying " I believe in God", or being part of a church or saying "Jesus" like 100 times a day gets you to Heaven all the time. I also think it's not every Muslim, Buddhist , Jew , Hindhu or even atheist that will be excluded from Heaven either. It's what you have in the heart.

But when I say that militant atheist are judgemental, it's because they put a bad label on Christianity, it's followers and God. They always see the dark side without never acknowledging the good side and it's benefits. Sure, there have been evils and atrocities commited in the name of Christianity, but they seem to blow it out of proportion. They also exagerate with their one sided opinions.

And look at all the nasty things that are said on the internet about people who believe in God. You even have one atheist site with the title " God is for suckers". I know they're are anti atheist sites, but never have I found " Atheism is for scum" and I hope we never do.
Another reason why I find certain atheist to be judgemental is they are always challenging people who believe in God to give intelligentproof and explanations that He exist and to explain why the world is in such a shape as it is. Give them scientific proof that shows that the universe was created by an intelligent designer, the complexity of human biology, the five senses and inherited ability to communicate was not an accident of evolution but because we were created in the image of God, the bashing starts.

If they say "we don't believe in God, we don't find proof but we respect your beliefs", then I say we should do vice versa. But if we read " Sorry to tell you the truth, but God does not exist, stop believing in superstitious nonsense and free your minds" then they go too far, just like so called Christians who will say " Believe in Christ or burn in hell" which is not a Christian thing to say.
I have not read all the comments Chris, but I'd say you have some accurate observations of how atheists act I think. Atheism... it is really quite silly if you ask me. In fact I'd argue it takes more faith to believe something came from nothing, and that we all got here by an astronomical (no pun intended) amount of random chance. Most likely what athiesm does for people is, and it totally depends on the individual and all, but I'd say many athiests want to feel that they have the power to control their own destiny, they don't want God, or whoever dictating for them what they can and cannot do and they certainly don't want to have to answer to Anyone for how they lived their lives. Thus, they desperately need justification for this so they usually do much of the above said stuff. They are basically just humanists..."man has all authority over man's own destiny" blah blah blah... so in a round about way they like to think of themselves as God. Quite honesly what it really comes down to is the oldest sin in the book... pride.
Now I know there are many reasons people become atheists, but seemed like from the ones I've met that was the benefit of not believing in God to them.
Gotta agree with you Andy. I heard many excuses such as God being a mass murderer, uncaring or unjust. Also they will look at the Christian fanatics that make God believers look bad, such as the " God warrior" Very scary. But I agree , they will use any excuse to disprove God so they can live the way they want. I remember hearing from one of the anti God squad saying " I rather burn in hell, than worship a controling God that has a big ego problem" Did I forget to tell you she looked kind of promiscuous, which gives you an idea .

As you said the oldest sin: pride. When you think of it, Satan, Adam and Eve, commited atheist acts in some ways.
