Now that the rainy season has finally passed, we can all enjoy summer activities! There are so many things to do: go to the beach, play sports, hiking, swimming, as well as doing chores such as house cleaning. I enjoy summer in Japan because I can do things that I would not otherwise be able to do in my home country (USA). You may be asking, "What kinds of things can you do in Japan that you can't do in America?" For me, I like the fact that one can enjoy a BBQ by the river and drink alcohol openly without the need to conceal it in a paper bag in order to avoid harassment from the law. The general public in this country is in my opinion responsible and considerate. Even after drinking all day in the sun, there is no worry about a drunken skirmish taking place and most people properly clean up after themselves and take home all of their trash. Another popular activity in Japan is doing fireworks. In America, fireworks are only legal on the 4th of July (Independence Day) and even then, the realm of "safe and sane" fireworks have gone from roman candles, and bottle rockets during my childhood to sparklers and pop-its. It's nice to be able to head to the convenience store and pick up fire crackers and bottle rockets at anytime, instead of driving for and hour to the reservation to purchase these now illegal fireworks. Even though fireworks are so readily available, there is not a big problem of garbage left around or even worse, fires being started. This comes back to respect and responsibility. So no matter how you like to spend your summer vacation, please have fun and be safe. As for me, I'll enjoy these freedoms while I can before they eventually get taken away.

Hi, Tate !?
I've been in LA for almost two years. I like the weather in here, and I'm having fun playing sports and run by the beach. However, just like you say, I feel less freedom playing fireworks. I played fireworks onJuly 4th. It was fun, but I still feel Japanese hanabi is better than here. What I do in here for free time is just playing soccer with my friends, or going to mall or beach, or read books at bookstore.
