It was Nelson Mandela's spirit of global cooperation come to life. French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy joined British superstar Dave Stewart and the Soweto Gospel Choir in singing an American classic, Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind." “The Mandela Day Concert – A 46664 Celebration” at Radio City Music Hall proved to be a fitting tribute to celebrate the 91st birthday of the Nobel Peace Prize winner, former South African leader and, as host Whoopi Goldberg called him, "the world's classiest man. It was a night of musical royalty with Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, Queen Latifah, current chart king Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am, Stevie Wonder and others paying tribute as part of an international effort to recognize “Mandela Day” as a holiday that focuses on community service. Proceeds support 46664, the humanitarian campaign named after Mandela’s prison ID number. "Our struggle for freedom and justice was a collaborative effort," Mandela said in a taped message. "'Mandela Day' is no different. It is in your hands to create a better world."
Cyndi Lauper and Lil Kim did their part, teaming up for a surprising, yet touching combination of "Time After Time" and "Lighters Up." Franklin and Josh Groban turned his "You Raise Me Up" into a stirring duet. And Angelique Kidjo and Alicia Keys were delightful on Kidjo's "Afrika." Queen Latifah was thrilling with "I Know Where I've Been" from "Hairspray," wile Gloria Gaynor showed how "I Will Survive" could be seen as a political anthem.
Both Franklin and Wonder were stunning with their political numbers, with Franklin bringing down the house with the thunderous "Make Them Hear You" and Wonder more poignant on "Keep Our Love Alive."
With all the music and the superstar testimonials from Morgan Freeman and Susan Sarandon, Mandela's influence in politics was not forgotten. In a taped message, President Barack Obama credited Mandela as a political inspiration, adding, "His life teaches us that the impossible can be done."
