AFAIK, the only people called Cantonese are those from the Canton (広東) area of China.

>> ....cantonese is a person that come from Switzerland..

I have no idea where this came from.
Switzerland is Federal State, and includes many "state"s like U.S.A.
the "canton" is also the name of Swiss state. In Switzerland, "state" is called the name of "canton", and this Federal State consists of 26 cantons.
Please don't confuse "Canton" of Chinese name of province.
Swiss "canton" means Political devided area like "省" in China, "県" in Japan, "道" in Korea, "Land" in Germany or "state" in U.S. and India.
My girlfriend is also from Hong Kong, and she usually says she is Chinese. I've never heard her call herself Cantonese, but she will say she speaks Cantonese.

BTW - The province in China we used to call "Canton" is now called Guangdong, where the city (which is also the province's capital) that we used to call "Canton" is now known as Guangzhou.

Thank you very much!!! I didnt know that before....

Yes, most Hong Kong ppl called themself just Hong Kong Chinese.......But, some english speaking ppl here distinguish the chinese by what the mother tongue we say....In fact, it's quite a good way to describe a person effectively...........
I thought he was just joking because he is an Italian.
Funny, I didn't know there was such a thing as "canton" in Switzerland. I definitely know there's a city in the USA called Canton, tho.

I've heard people from Hong Kong refer to themselves in several different ways... usually, if you're talking to somebody who's non-Chinese, they just say they're Chinese.

If they're talking to somebody who's Chinese (or a non-Chinese person who actually has knowledge about varied intricacies of China's regions & dialects), you'll hear them say that they're Cantonese or Hong Kong Chinese (as opposed to Taiwanese /Shanghainese / Fujianese / Hokkiense).

An analogy that might help: when a Japanese person meets a non-Japanese person, they might introduce themselves as Japanese... but when a Japanese person meets another Japanese person, they might say they're Edoko or Osaka-jin...

About me: my father's family is from Hong Kong and he spoke Cantonese & Mandarin. My mother's family is from a small village in Guangdong, but they speak Toisanese (dialect of Chinese closer to Cantonese than to Mandarin).
You don't care about most thing.
Just jokes or I know Italy many people the most.
I know what you mean :) Over here in Singapore we have Cantonese Hainanese Hokkiens Kheks Teochew and many other dialect groups but we all are CHINESE XD I can totally relate to you saying that you're cantonese.

in switzerland, as explained by #3, area segmentations by the government are defined as cantons. i guess your friend wasn't familiar with the term 'cantonese'... i mean, if i live in a province, i'm not a provincer, am i? or if i live in a prefecture, i'm not a prefect either. so i think your friend was probably confused with how to use the term XD
Hi ピーター.

Thanks for the information. That leaves me wondering if it's still the same 広東 in Chinese characters? I know that 北京 used to be called Peking but Beijing now. Are these just the phonetic representations of the place names that are closer to the original pronunciation?
I think he's got confusion as he is an Italian.

There is area called "Canton Ticino", which is Swiss boarder to Italy. Ticinese is people who live in the area and/or language (Lombardy Italian). From the sound of "Cantonese", he mixed up "Cantonese" and "Ticinese" most likely.

I had been staying in Italy for 3 years up until this March. I understand that it may happen this kind of confusion when a normal Italian speaks or write English.

→Oh, your last name is Chan....That mean your dad is definiately a Cantonese......

By the way, what is Edoko?
And what is Toisanese? in Kanji?
I used to live in Canton de Vaud en Suisse (http://www.vd.ch/) ... but then, the mystery word has already been explained correctly and in details @ Comment #3.
テレサ>
The characters for Toisan are 「台山」. It's also pronounced "Hoisan" (more Toisanese pronounciation) or "Taishan" (Mandarin pronounciation).

Edoko is old slang for someone from Tokyo... kanji for it is 「江戸子」.
I hear the prononciation in southern part of China is quite different from that of north. We understand different intonation or pronunciation often leads to a set of identity, what we call a dialect.
東野先生:

The definition of "dialect/language" is often more political than geographical. The main Chinese "dialects" such as Mandarine and Cantonese are not mutually intelligible when spoken, but they are called dialects (of the Chinese language). OTOH, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian are pretty close to one another yet they are considered different languages. :)
funny sometimes different people have different definitions for the same word and don't realize it.

for years i only knew "canton" as the small box on the top-left corner of a flag, and "helvetica" as the familiar sans-serif typeface you see everywhere. then several years ago i got into an argument with a french client of mine over the design of a swiss ski resort brochure i was designing. i insisted that there was no canton on the swiss flag and helvetica wouldn't look too good on it. he insisted that i was wrong and insulting to the swiss people. of course, he thought i was talking about the swiss cantons (states) and the switzerland itself (in latin, confoederatio helvetica). it took us a good half an hour to finally realize the silly misunderstanding and laugh at it. :-)
