Hey so what is everyone's normal way of getting around on an everyday basis. Riding a bike, walkin, driving etc. Ya, mine was my $20 bike until someone stole it. So now I just walk or take my car.
My commute to and from work is done by the company bus, where only people from the company can ride it. Sounds nice eh? No, not really. The piece of junk has no suspension. Combine that with ill road conditions, no emission testing, midsummer weather conditions (A/C seems to be reserved for CEOs and Mafia leaders) and multiply that by 2 hours, it doesn't add up to a fun experience. I basically try to fall asleep as quickly as possible to avoid becoming sick.
For my personal travels I use auto-rickshaws where one is forced to learn the art of haggling lest they get gracefully ripped off owing mostly to being a visible foreigner.
Rickshaws! I rode them a few times when I went to Bombay. Quite a rodeo ride, I'd say. You happen to know that the word "rickshaw" came from the Japanese 「力車」? ;)
I usually commute by car. Thirty-minute drive each way.
I don't like taking a taxi/car so much, because when I take a car I often feel sick. I prefer walking if the destination wasn't so far, I would ride on a bike if it might take time to move. If the distance is too far, I would choose train/subway...
By the way, I feel that train fare in Japan is too expensive. Taking an example of subway in Osaka, the base fare is 230JPY-- yes, it means only to move one station you will have to pay 230yen. You can buy almost 2 cans of coffee with that expense! For that reason, when I need to move only 1-2 stops more, I even don't take the subway, try to use my bike or just walk--- it is good for my health too!
To get to work, I take a commuter train and the subway.
I have a Chrysler PT Cruiser that I use for transportation elsewhere and for hauling stuff. That thing's amazing - we fit a full-size patio screen door inside it a few weeks ago!
I thought the minimum fare for the Osaka Municipal Subway was 200 yen, but my information may not be up-to-date. In any case, it's still cheaper than taking a cab or even your own car, considering how much you have to pay for parking in Osaka. :)
BTW, the minimum fare for the Hankyu Railway is 150 yen, if I remember correctly.
I commute from Brooklyn to Manhattan on Umberto my Vespa GTS 250.
Scooters are a great mode of transportation in New York with all the traffic and crazy cab drivers. It also beats using the unreliable smelly dirty subway!
The subway's not that bad. I take it everyday to work (because I can't get up in the morning!) In the evening, I walk home, though. It's a nice walk and I don't have to worry about being late. ^.^;;
I have a Mini Cooper for when I want to get out of New York City, though. It's a really cute car and I like it a lot. ^.^
だいはどsan, thank you for your correction.
Yes, you are right, the minimum fare of Osaka subway is 200JPY (today I checked the sign at ticket machine area). Actually I have understood that it is 230JPY.
Oh,no~~~I am very embarrassed as the one who lives in Osaka..><
I actually agree that a minimum train fare of 200 yen is rather high. Like I said, it is 150 yen for the Hankyu Railway. I'd imagine it's about the same for Hanshin. The pattern I see is that public-owned companies, such as Osaka Municipal Subway and JR, tend to set the fares higher than private companies.
Hi there,
minimum jpy200 is rather expensive, isn't it?? i think tube-underground in Yokohama is the same minimum jpy200.
i'm living in Shinjuku at the moment so I use train or underground 2 or 3times in a day. the problem is that there are so many train/tube companies in Tokyo/Osaka so we have to pay money for every transfer.
i realy need a one-day-ticket or something like that.
You can buy a prepaid card that works for almost all the train lines in the Kansai area. Those cards don't give you any discount, but they are at least very convenient in that you can slide one through the turnpike just like a regular ticket. The fare will be deducted from the card.
Living in the USA where most public transportation has been wiped out by the GM lobby, I'm forced to drive my car to work every day. No choice because the roads are too dangerous for bicycles (crazy drivers).
Well I use the service public!! Its clean and safe and almost free for college students!! The college give us a pass that is good any time during the semester. well they sell it for 10 bucks! well anyway is a great deal 10 bucks for unlimited rides during 6 months!!! well only includes bus and light rail...Well anyway the actuall fair is $2.75 its more expensive than japan!! ^ ^ hehe!
Counter part here in the Sacramento california u CAN'T live with out a car...The public system really is bad because u cant get anywhere and each bus takes up to 50 minutes to come...the most time i waited for the bus was 6 hours!
and after 10 pm u cant get a bus anywhere so...is bad for partying > <' and here everything is so apart from averything!! hehehe well...
Tell me about it. If I take the bus to work, I need to transfer once and it takes nearly an hour and a half. It costs $3 one way, too, which is actually as expensive as the gas I use one way. Public transport in this area just stinks.
I take my car to work (Toyota Mark II, but an older model) everyday. I would like to use public transportation (the bus), but since I live only 10km away from my work, it isn't worth it. Round trip costs me $5 on the bus, and there is no way that 20km costs $5 of gas.
I'm thinking if I should buy a bike or not because that would be free and also a good source of exercise!
You probably get 7 km/L or so, which means you use 3 litres of gas for your round-trip commute... I guess it's probably cheaper than taking the bus unless regular gas costs more than $1.70 per litre. :)
I often use the bus. Actually, in Nanaimo(Canada) it's too unconvenient wihtout car. But I have no driver license. Or sometime, I walk!! My homestaying house is near from the biggest mall in Nanaimo. since I came here, I got fat, so I often walk to exercise!!
Since this is an English Only board, hopefully it isn't rude if I correct your English Erika:
