I've been teaching here in Japan for a few years now, and I'm looking to head back to the English-Speaking world. I want to get a job teaching ESL in BC and I know I have the skills, but I don't have any kind of certification. I need a piece of paper that change my first impression from 'some guy who got drunk in Japan' to 'a professional in the feild with years of experience'
Does anyone know of a good program I can take from Japan that will give me a certificate that employers will respect?
I am not in the teaching industries, but, I have been a student at ESL long ago. I think if you really think you have the skills and talent in teaching English, you don't really need certificate. You should be able to obtain a good letters of references from employers in Japan. That will be enough for someone who does not have a degree but experiences. Experiences are important, but there are advanced techniques and organization of class that you might be able to improve. Not all, but many TESOL certified teachers are really talented and sophisticated in many ways when compared with lay teachers.
You could even negotiate your new employer in BC to pay for tuition in order to go to TESOL programs there if what you say is convincing.
I dunno about Japan, but here in Seattle, there are several universities with teaching/education departments offer some sort of certification program for teaching ESL.
