Has anyone actually had a black out yet?
What's the food situation where you are?

I saw eggs for the first time since Saturday this morning!

And milk for the first time this afternoon.

I've heard from my girlfriend that the reason for milk "shortages" is that most of the major carton manufacturers are in Ibaraki. There's plenty of milk available but nothing to put it in...
Are the blackouts in just Tokyo or in other cities as well?
All over Kanto. The 23-wards area of Tokyo is the only part to mostly be exempt from blackouts although I think some of the residential areas (like Nerima) have been added to the lists...
I've personally experienced two at work and three at home. Yokohama area.
My whole family except me is in Sendai. Although the electricity and water is back on again, my mother said yesterday that she queued for 3 hours!!!! only to be able to buy 2 portions of deli-type bread... and she queued for my niece to buy nappies and said that they were taking it out of the package and selling it in 5 nappy sets!!!!! it's so awful even in sendai that I can't even imagine what it would be like in the really badly affected areas like Kamaishi and Kesennuma....
横山ハニー>> Oh wow, in Sendai... Sorry to hear that!!!... I heard that once you go to Nagoya things are normal (gas, food, etc.)

Do you think the shortage of food is from damage to the roads, or panic buying?
エディー>>
I think it's a bit of both, maybe like 6:4.
the distribution channels are messed up for sure, and I've heard that everything right now that's being sent up there is being given to the camps, and not to the city. (which is understandable)

panic buying on the first day may have left the stores semi-empty, but since then there's been strict limits placed on most commodities (if you're lucky, "1 of each product per person" if not, "2 products per person")

my ma was on the phone complaining about ATMs today. she said that most of the local banks are closed, and Mizuho is down, and the queues to the other megabanks are nuts. my poor ma... (no pun intended!!!)

横山ハニー>> Yes, I couldn't get my paycheck because of mizuho.
Also, supermarket is restocked except for some minor shortages... but they can't take credit cards.
The panic purchasing of goods seem to have calmed in my area of Shinagawa-ku. The shops where I commonly go for food are Tokyu Store and Maruetsu Petite. The shelves have restocked over the past several days.

Radiation levels seem to be normal in Tokyo as well.

Today it was at 0.1 μSv/h which is considered normal.
The Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan considers a reading of 5 μSv/h a reportable event.

I am continuing to follow the news for updates and hope the recovery will be smooth with the support of many individuals and corporations in and outside of Japan.
