Now anybody is welcome to put his/her two cents in.
I am a 32 year-old Japanese national. I teach business men English. Hi, everyone:)
So I was in class telling my students how BBC World has been all over the Papal visit for the last few days when one of them dropped this bomb in my face.
Sensei, what does the Pope do? Why is he there?
Horrifying indeed, for an Japanese English teacher who doesnt really know anything except for how to get by in simple English.
Please help?? ;)
Incidentally, I do know how to google stuff and also, the existence of Wikipedia. I am just wondering how YOU would explain...For future reference;p Thanks millions
Well, the current pope seems to offend pretty much everyone because of his hard line remarks.. Not to mention his background in the Hitler Youth.. Technically, he is considered the head of state for the Vatican and is a leader, if you will, of entire Catholic followers because of his title as the Bishop o Rome. It is derivative of Roman religious high office, Pontifex Maximus, and the current Catholic church adopted this title for their own use. They used to enjoy political power in Europe but they have since then focused solely on religious matters. They have the power to decide what is a moral, Catholic, behavior. The papal visit to Britain was controversial because of one of his aides' remark that England resembled an atheist, backward third-world country, not to mention the complex religious history that ended up in the creation of the Church of England.
Catholics would say that the Pope is the direct lineal descendant of Peter. The main reason the claim to be the true church (as I understand it) is that they can supposedly trace the leader of the church all the way back to Peter.
Personally I think it's a load of bunk. What he does is make people feel guilty for doing things that should make them happy. I always find it interesting that Christians have palpitations if 2 consenting adults are depicted have sex on TV....but they're quite OK with children seeing more than 2,500 murders depicted on TV before they are 10.

I think indeed it's bollocks, the entire system. I mean, the Brits were probably pissed off at priests molesting alter boys as much as the fact that they were designated atheist heathens. And then there's that whole bit about burning people as witches just because they were tripping..
Protestants think there is no intermediary between a Christian and God.
Catholics don't think this way. So, Pope is the authoritative figure between a non-Protestant Christian and God.
Thus, the pope is believed to have jurisdiction over the entire Christian (non-Protestant) church in matters of faith, morals and church government.
This doctrine is known as papal primacy.
One thing to remember is that if one mocks Christian leaders, radical Christians say you have sinned and should repent. (maybe a knuckle sandwich at worst). If one mocks Islamic figures, good chance of getting a fatwa on you, and you will be hunted down and killed like a dog.

That should be a comfort to the families of women's health professionals who have
been murdered by Christians. Sure it's a slightly different situation but there are
nut cases in all religions and suggesting that Muslim nut-cases are any more
crazy than Christian nut-cases doesn't really hold.
OP asked:
>> Sensei, what does the Pope do? Why is he there?
Seems to be a broad enough question to me to allow a
broad range of response.
>> In simple terms, the Pope is the political and spiritual
>> mortal leader of the Vatican State.
I'm not so sure about him being a political leader although
I guess he does wield some political influence. It was
probably the case in the past but these days everyone
is so hyper-sensitive about separation of church and
state that I imagine they would be very careful to avoid
offering political views.
I said it seems like it. Take it as a compliment. It means you are either knowledgeable enough to have a valid entry on wikipedia, or you copied it. You have established that you are not the latter.
As for pope and politics. The pope deals with matters and policies of the Vatican state, therefore he is a politician. Doesn't mean he has to comment on other nations or events.

In that case, thank you for your compliments. You'll find me usually on edge because I get more criticism than acknowledgments. A habit I picked up from being in brutal seminars...
The Pope indeed is a head of state of the Vatican but is the Vatican state religious or secular? There is no question that Vatican indeed is a sovereign state and the Pope its de facto leader, but it's not specified as such in any written document, for example. Its territory consists of just over 40 acres of palace complexes, basilica, and the gardens with population of about 800. It's safe to assume, therefore, that the supposed sovereignty is more symbolic than practical. His status as the leader of all Catholics - a mediator between christian god and the believers is more emphasized, Are his dictations political as well as religious? Absolutely so.
