So... I'm unsure of the media attention it has had in the US and japan. When you follow the Link you'll get to the WikiLeak site, where they've got a video from a US gunship engaging a group of people in Iraq. Radio is in the video too. The contents are VERY graphic (death of some people) dont watch this if you're unsure. Its taken by the usual grey gunsights that we all know from TV when bombs hit bunkers etc. Whats the general take on this? Is it in the newspapers in Japan? As far as I've followed the US forum I'm on the opinions vary from "Its their own fault for looking suspicious" over "Deplorable, but no big deal" to "Needs to be investigated"
I'm pretty sure there won't ever be any monuments for iraqui victims, nor will there be courts against the people in charge held, nor will there be movies made every year displaying Americans either as psycho murderers nor dumb idiots.
This deserves to be a very big story, but it hasn't been that big in the US press yet.
Unfortunately I think the exceptional thing about this story is that it's not particularly exceptional. The soldiers didn't act against orders or ignore safeguards that should have prevented this, the fact is simply that the army's urban anti-insurgency tactics cause a large amount of civilian deaths.
They lost a lot of comrades from road bombings and suicide bombings.
They thought they had the right to kill any suspicious guys to protect themselves.
They were getting paranoid. That's what was going on over there.
But, this is not combat but a random assault.
this is no justifiable.
I think that these things, unfortunately, are a product of war. The cameramen were looking suspicious in a warzone.
HOWEVER, I have a serious problem with how the soldiers carried themselves. Total
disregard for human life. They should do their job and keep the comedy out. I'm
sure people who have been in war will say I don't know what I'm talking about,
granted, but still it's a job. Do it with respect.
The footage is from 2007. I'm not sure when this happened but it seems that there was something afoot around that area so I think even when the radio does not show it the soldiers could have been on the edge or perhaps angry by an attack shortly before. If you follow the link on the website to the "colleteral murder" site you can see the unedited video where the helicopters shoot three missiles into a building where there are 6 armed people inside. One guy walking by seems to be hit also. So I think there was something going on around there that had made the soldiers angry, like an ambush or something.
What I find disturbing aside from the radio is that they shot on the Van. They knew that the van was about to bring away wounded persons and assumed that those wonded were terrorists. But even then you dont shoot on wounded people or the peope who help other wounded people. Even when they help your enemy. The radio is i think a sad byproduct of the video game feel that you get from these gun cameras, they sound a bit like playing a computer game. Perhaps a psychological defence mechanism?
You don't know what killing people is like unless you stab a guy with a knife and get blood splashed back on you.
Shooting guns or missiles and dropping bombs are too easy as if you are playing games.
it's not the first time in history that civilists were killed by (angry) soldiers, but unlike previous examples there won't be monuments or mechanisms branding americans or their fathers as murderers. Therefore nevermind.
there is no peaceful way to engage in war. There is no politically correct way to engage in war. Where there is war, there will be death. Its that simple. War is not a garden of beautiful tulips. Its called war for a reason: People die. The only way to avoid collaterals of war, is to not have war in the first place. To quote boy george, "war is stupid."
