Here's a topic that seems to have many people here on mixi furious. The government is currently investigating whether to break up some of the consecutive holidays in Japan known as Golden Week and Silver Week.
The idea being put forth is to divide Japan into 5 sectors:
1) Hokkaido, Tohoku, North-Kanto areas
2) South Kanto area
3) Chubu, Hokuriku Shinetsu areas
4) Kinki area
5) Chugoku, Shikoku, Kyushu, Okinawa areas
and then Golden Week and Silver Week would vary for each region, spread out over a 5 week period, or a 2.5 week period.

Some of the blogs and posts I have read in Japanese are complaints that people going home for these holidays might not be able to visit with family members due to different regions having to work while others are on holiday.
I'd love to tell the politicians to take their heads out of their asses, but I haven't heard their reasoning for this proposal yet. The only thing the news report says, is that the politicians will be asking the private sector for "opinions" on the matter. IF this actually goes through, it could change GW and SW as early as 2012.

I can see how the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is worried about the huge traffic jams and differing weather in each region, but there is still no mention of how this will affect families that use the GW holidays to visit relatives.

I doubt if this will really work looking at the way they divide regions.
First off, okay let's say the Kinki area is having a five-day vacation, it's still that the whole Kinki is having holidays, many drivers get stuck in traffic wondering why it's no better. Some people didn't even think about going out because they knew it would be crowded everywhere, but now more people feel like going out expecting less congestion.
For those flying overseas, they all use Kansai International Airport crowded as ever. It would be a good idea to go somewhere outside Kinki, but still they all have to go all the jammed way out.
Another problem is large companies have branches all over Japan, so when a guy in Tokyo office needs to talk to a guy in Osaka about an important business, but the guy is not in; his job gets stuck...
In my opinion, it would be better if each company decides when to take five-day vacation and it should be mandatory.

I think the whole "Golden Week" & "Silver Week" stuff is a bunch of crap... it's just a way for the governments to FORCE people into taking holidays and then when time to travel, the travel agencies & airlines all make major bank off the fact that they raise the prices like crazy because of the demand!
Trust me, the same things happen in other western countries with holidays such as Christmas/New Years or Thanksgiving... but we can also choose to drive more places than here in Japan.
I always make sure that I make my travel plans before or after these stupid periods, to save my money for better things!
