(Book of the same name by Ethan Watters) - Watters argues that while the US is exporting various things (entertainment, culture, etc.) it is exporting many forms of psychological ailment. Pharmaceutical companies in Japan, he says, are making billions thanks to depression--a relatively recent "illness" here, and one he maintains has its roots not within Japanese society, but is something that entered the culture here due to Americans.
So: what do you guys think? Do values exported through various media from one culture end up affecting other cultures? And do you think that, in turn, causes psychological ailments? Or are other factors at play? (Factors that drug companies would give names and symptoms to only in order to facilitate sales of their products?)
Accidents are become rare in England these days too (and probably soon to be in Japan) because of the Americansm that came over of thinking that there is no such thing as an accident, someone is always to blame, so sue them for lots of money!
How the hell did some woman in america sue McDonalds because she drank a HOT cup of coffee and burdned her mouth, seriously, that's called common sense, she deserved it, she wont do it again! But yet. in america she managed to sue and make millions!
This type of culture has reached europe and it will hit Japan in a big way too
I think England should revoke America's Independance and become part of UK again, we'll sort them out, haha
