the olympics are not a net gain for the host cities monetarily
additionally they are basically enormous marketing events dressed up in patronising rot about 'striving to be the best' or whatever asinine faux-inspirational garbage they crank out this time

Olympic games on paper often lose money, but that is usually
because most of the income generated goes to business. So
the government pays to host the Olympics and the local economy
benefits.
As a rule if you include the entire economy the Olympics are a
net gain....and not a small net gain either. Atlanta are still seeing
benefits from the Olympics there almost 20 years later. Likewise
with Sydney.
I don't think it matters all that much, Tokyo lost. You move on, try
again in a few years.

ダレン、you bitter bitter man. Nothing wrong with watching the best athletes in the world do things better than anyone else and waves flags for a couple weeks every 2-4 years.
Back on topic, Tokyo's citizens should be ashamed of themselves for basically not caring enough and losing what should have been a sure shot through apathy.

Not really, Tokyo and Beijing are completely distinct from each
other in the same way Athens and London are both in Europe
but completely distinct. I don't think Tokyo did anything wrong,
nor did Chicago or Madrid. Rio won but that doesn't mean
the other bids were poor.

issue. I have a mate who was in Rio with his girlfriend and he
was mugged on a crowded bus. Well he wasn't actually mugged,
he's in 4 RAR so he knows a bit about a fight. He tore them
to bits with his umbrella and then he and his girlfriend legged
it. But the point is, Tokyo, Chicago and Madrid are much safer

I am SO glad Tokyo did not get it. Tokyo had all the practicality, but not enough HEART to host the games,, and the region of Asia had the 2008 summer games. I am terribly happy that Rio has been awarded the right, because it has been far too long a wait for South America. Just watching the faces of the people dancing and screaming...I cannot wait to go back to Rio and see all my friends and family! It is going to be so much fun!
On a side note, I read that Tokyo convinced all the other Asian-area delegates to vote in bloc for Tokyo, causing Chicago to loose votes that might have made it a tough match for Rio and Madrid. There is a big controversy brewing right now within the committee. If that was true, then I think the Tokyo delegates did themselves a disservice.
Anyway, RIO! A Cidade Maravilhosa!! I can't wait! :D Now, if any country in Africa could become "stable" (let's see how S. Africa does with the World Cup) then it's their chance as well! Ganbatte!!

I don't care about how my country performs in the Olympics. Screw living my life through my country's performance in various aspects, look at many Chinese. Try to talk to most of them about anything to do with their country's politics, hilarity ensues.
Sure, athletics (in particular) are great to watch, but to view it on the view of which person/team is better than on nationality makes the experience all that much greater, I would wish for the athletes to win on the basis of their characteristics and the like, not due to their nationality. What's funny is you see people blinded with their false national pride cheering on someone who is originally from a different country (and only immigrated from their poor country on the basis of their skills in their sport) but is now under their flag.
Olympics should be what it was like prior to Berlin's and the USSR's. Less political, and more about the competition, not what it is about today.

I read in the paper, that if you live in Tokyo, your local taxes would increase by a minimum of 10000yen annually, just to host the Olympics in 2016. So in that regard, I am thankful Rio got the Olympics. Should Japanese companies want to make money they could help Rio build their infrastructure needed for the 2016 games. NHK had a special report a year ago, showing the debt caused by the previous Olympic in Tokyo has not been paid off. The had to create many highways and various areas of infrastructure were needed in place to prepare for the previous Tokyo Olympics. In order to meet their deadline, the government rushed a lot of the those projects(like highways) and had to go back and fix or patchwork them after the games were done.
Also Ishihara might have ticked off a few voters in the IOC with his lame comment:
"It could be that the 2016 Games are the last Olympics in the history of mankind"

I suspect that a majority of the people who wear uniforms and root for their country do it because it's fun, pure and simple. Sure, the world would be a better place if people stopped following the Olympics and spent their time on more altruistic activities, but you could say that about practically any hobby, so that's probably irrelevant.
As for the failed bid, I'd be perfectly willing to absolve anyone of their responsibility as long as they promise to refrain from making another bid for 2020 or or 2024. I don't want it, and apparently a lot of other people don't either, so come on, let some other city have it.

I can't believe how much the people of Tokyo either didn't care, or actually opposed the games. Even if they're not somebody cup of tea, having the games causes a lot of amazing things to happen to the city, and things get updated for the better. Because the people in Japan couldn't care either way, they lost.
