Lately the popularity level of US President Obama are falling over the Afghan involvement. Still though not as much as the popularity of western nations among the Afghan people. In the most recent incident, some kidnapped road tanker were bombed in direct order of german military. The effect of this action: two destroyed road tankers and several dozen dead civilists. One might ask - does that belong to the daily "horror news" on TV, that we're allready used to? Not quite, because that incident is very much self made.

We remember, the NATO involvement in Afghanistan started with the attacks on Word Trade Center on 11/9 2001. Former US President Bush then started his campaign against El Qaeda and a lot of new phrases were born. Just remember "War on Terror", "this is old Europe", "The Axis of Evil", "The coalition of the willing", "Code Orange", "Sleepers", "Illegal combatants", "Enemies of Freedom", "Waterboarding" etc. etc. These idioms created under a regime that neither cared for other countries, nor for it's own citizens have not been abolished - unlike the Bullshits (erh Bushists). Governments and military leaders think and act with the same philosophy of Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and Cheney.

The involvement in Afghanistan is officially declared as peace keeping mission. Opposing fighters there are obligatory entitled as Terrorists. The German minister of Defense in example says "We don't have a war in Afghanistan, we support the people with reconstruction". If you ask yourself, what does a terrorist look like - don't you have the image of a masked man setting up a bomb or taking hostages in order to pressure governments for fullfilling certain demands? Armed civilians who don't belong to regular armies had been called Partisans up lately, and military actions in areas with Partisan activities also haven been called a war.

In principle, the western governments are lying to us. They've became too arrogant to recon the reality. Satellites, Planes and High Tech Drones can't control territory. You don't need to spent some million Dollar for a missile to kill someone, a bullet can do the same for considerably less money. And the simple fact that Taliban commanders kidnapped two road tankers and handed them to some civilians proved they are notably smarter then western military commanders along with their ministers of defense. Because they could think ahead that firstly western military would chase the tankers, secondly the civilians would see them as modern Robin Hood and thirdly that the military would not send a troopforce to recapture them but rather destroy the fuel which means a loss of western supplies along with an immense reputational damage due to civilians losses.

Not that I'm defending the performance of Western countries in the region, but Afghanistan was screwed up long before NATO ever arrived and will probably be screwed up for quite a long time after.

Very fascinating photodocumentary by Michael Yon, renowned news photographer:: http://www.michaelyon-online.com/precision-voting.htm

"The problem is not that Americans and others supported the Mujahadin...The problem is not the artificial boundaries penciled in by the British all over Asia and the Middle East. The people are backwards and many want it that way."
