well I have not... I wish though!! I want to involve in the conversation like, "Has the jury reached the verdict?" "Yes, we have, your honor." nice, I do find being in a courtroom sexy. haha! Japan will have the citizen judge system in 2009, which will be slightly different from the jury system in the U.S. and UK.

Also I would love to become one of citizen judges sometime, but I do consider that this system is not really for shy Japanese people who can't even speak responsibly (people really do not like to make things clear in Japan IMHO), and citizen judges could be easily manipulated and pressurized by the lamest media on earth that has no media literacy (man, tv sucks over there).

What's your thought on this?

Maybe we'll see a change in the 99.9% conviction rate though, that can only get better.
I certainly agree about media literacy... but to be honest I'm not sure that citizen judges are a good idea in any country...
>sigh...

i know. they are either blindsided, or totally biased. it almost seems like all defendants are already guilty once they enter the courtroom. failures(any defendants) are not welcome in japan therefore the extreme court ruling always plays in favor of prosecutors.... it does suck, and childish japanese citizens may not be ready for court ruling but hopefully the system changes a bit....

>fenomas

The japanese journalism been cranksided for too long... i don't believe a word that they say. citizen judges are probably ok in any other countries but japan IMO.
I got a summons twice in my life. The first time I just ignored it, and later they sent me a letter saying they didn't need me. The second time I told them I was going to be in Japan for 6 months, which I am, and they let me go.
>グレッグ

that's cool, but usually if you ignore it, you are like subject to civil or criminal penalties right?
you must be lucky if you didn't get fined no?

btw, i am sounding like i truly hate japan with a passion. but no, i love japan to death.
just raising my voice into an obnoxious dark side of japan hehe

Not really, maybe if you live in Nowheresville, population 5, the government might get angry about that. But me and my sister have never served, despite being asked at least two times each. I heard that if you ignore it 3 times, something may go awry, but I have yet to hear of anyone who has actually been punished. I usually hear tales of such events from someone who knows someone, who read about it. I should add that I live in California, USA. But yeah, it seems if you do a combination of ignoring and calling in excuses you don't have to serve.
>Greg

gotcha. dude i would definitely love to hear some awesome closing statements or arguments if i ever become one of jury. you are missing out man :p

>Nicole

I beg to oppose... have you heard the national philosophy called "Kotonakare-shugi" (principle of peace-at-any-price, got it from the dictionary :) )? dude it's so simple. they can be cold because they don't want to be involved in anything responsible when they don't have to. just plain utter selfishness. don't you love that? now, if they become an actual judge, do you think selected judges would want to hold such responsibility that may impact a defendant's life? don't think so. it's not very japanese. it will definitely challenge those people who stand oppose to the system currently. they just don't care because it's not personal! don't like that part of japan though... it may open some people's eyes but not so sure.
Actually, I'm not confident I can fulfill my responsibility.
I worried most about being involved in a judgement dealing with a felony. I cannnot imagine i sentence a death peanalty or a severe punishment
to somebody even if he or she have committed brutalities.
Giving a judgment implies having a significant impact on the peason. Is it alright that that is me?, i think. Can we stand the fact that many of people give an severe sentence?
>Life in Hawaii

dude you are not giving them anything. you only judge if the act was guilty or not guilty,
that's it. the judge is the one to hand down a sentence.

man someday i do want to say "we, the jury find the defendent....guilty of all charges".
then say "you just got served son! damn!" i'm just playin y'all
>Nicole

damn, now that's fucking cold and heartless. were you there? did you offer any help?

yes you suppose. again it's all about the plain self-centered act, as long as they themselves are ok, they don't give a flying rat's ass about others over there. your case is a bit extreme, but believable.

man, what the hell is wrong with tokyo people? fuck.
If there was any chance of survival I would have jumped down to save the baby automatically. But thats just me.

Jurors (People chosen to be in the Jury) will be screened to make sure they have what it takes to make important decisions. They can also be manipulated and hand picked. There is no perfect solution here.
11, 12, 13> It has nothing to do with Tokyo people, it is all people. This is what is commonly known as the bystander effect and the diffusion of responsibility. The Kitty Genovese incident prompted a lot of research into these phenomena.

Not yet. Kind of glad.
XD
But I know it happens sooner or later DX.

Uh,
I hate to bring this up, but I got something to tell you.

I don't care what you think, what you believe.
No.

But, this is not a Hollywood movie.
I kind of sick of watching this place get swarming with 4-letter-words, such as f**k.

If I were a teacher of Berlitz, I'd tell you the same thing.
Funny thing that i reas this. I have to serve jury duty tomorrow. This is my first time.
I have been asked 2 times already and they got cancelled. I was expecting the same
Thing this time. But I was wrong. So it's off to jury duty.

What do I think about it? "whomever is free of sin, throw the first rock"
I am no one to be judging someone.
whaa? wait, was this supposed to be an english educational website like iknow?

>14
would do the same here. that's just me though.

>15
Hold it! -sustained

>16
oh yea, i've heard of kitty genovese, i studied her case back in the college.
i always remember about her case because i love pesto (genovese sauce)
well that's kinda sick ain't it...

>17
man, you should be ashamed of yourself! :p

>18
order, order!
I've been called for jury duty 3 times and served on 2!
In Australia it's compulsory and it's very hard to get
out of it.
They really drive you batty. Imagine sitting in a room
with 11 other people 8 or 9 of whom you don't like
and discussing someone getting assaulted or raped.
There is usually a bully or two, you can recognise them
by their eagerness to be the foreman of the jury. You
encounter the worst of humanity in a courtroom and
half of them are sitting on the jury.
I've been called for Jury duty 2 times but just served once. It was great to be a part of the judicial process but I was turned off with the abundance of litigious lawsuits. I don't like the way people abuse the legal system in order to get money that they don't deserve... which was the case that I was a juror for.
I served once despite being a student (summer time.) It was mostly small time drug dealers, first time thieves etc.

It was kind of weird because I could have imagined any of my old high school day friends walking in lol.
