Hi! I live in Billings, Montana... and I discovered that my city is sister cities with Kumamoto (熊本市), Japan! So out of curiosity... does anyone here live in Kumamoto? And if so, please tell me about your city!
I live in Austin, Texas and our sister city is Oita (大分県, 大分市) in Kyushu.

Unfortunately, I have not hosted or even met anyone from Oita since 2001.
San Francisco (USA) since October 7th, 1957 (Sister Port since 1967)
San Paulo (Brazil) since October 27th, 1969
Chicago (USA) since November 9th, 1973
Shanghai (China) since April 18th, 1974 (Friendship Port 1981 & Business Partner City 1995)
Melbourne (Australia) since April 24, 1978 (Sister Port 1974 & Business Partner City 1999)
St. Petersburg (Russia) since August 16, 1979
Milan (Italy) since June 8th, 1981
Hamburg (Germany) since May 11th, 1989
Yes, it's usually done when there is a strong trade, business or tourism connection between the cities.
I think any two cities can be sister cities if the two agree on it.
Osaka's a big place, so there are plenty of guest rooms for all the sisters to sleep in.
Tokyo has 11:
New York City United States of America February 29,1960
Beijing People's Republic of China March 14,1979
Paris French Republic July 14,1982
New South Wales Australia May 9,1984
Seoul Republic of Korea September 3,1988
Jakarta Republic of Indonesia October 23,1989
Sao Paulo Federative Republic of Brazil June 13,1990
Cairo Arab Republic of Egypt October 23,1990
Moscow Russian Federation July 16,1991
Berlin Federal Republic of Germany May 14,1994
Rome Republic of Italy July 5,1996
Wow! Interesting responses, everyone!
It's cool that some of you have met people from your sister cities. One of my friends has a College Student from Kumamoto stay with him over the summer, but I myself (to my knowing) have never met anyone from our sister cities.
Now, my original hometown was Pasadena in Los Angeles County, California---but I'd never have known had I met someone from a sister city there either, since the ethnic population is so vast.
@ Yeshua:
Yeah! Billings is nice. Montana is pretty nice overall, as long as you stay around the mountains. Otherwise it's just empty yellow grassed plains (not very attractive). The best place in Montana is probably Glacier National Park. It's really gorgeous there. If anyone gets the chance to visit Montana, definitely visit Glacier Park! It's worth a trip!
