From ABC news (www.abc.net.au/news) -

The French Government could support a boycott of the Olympic Games opening ceremony as a protest against Beijing's actions in Tibet.

President Nicolas Sarkozy refused to rule out a boycott as he urged China to show responsibility over the unrest in Tibet.

The Australian Government says Chinese troops will not be welcome in Australia to guard the Olympic torch relay as it passes through Canberra in late April.

China has reportedly asked for its army to provide the security after pro-Tibetan protesters disrupted the lighting of the torch in Greece earlier this week.

I wish to thank Kellyさん for his thought provoking blog about the Tibetan crisis and the upcoming Olympic games to be held in Beijing. It prompted me to post this thread.

The Olympic games should not be used as a platform to protest government/political issues. It is a sporting event and it`s main purpose should be to try and bridge the gaps between different cultures, countries, beliefs, etc... I think any form of boycott would not be fare to the athletes that have been preparing for 4 years to compete against the best in their field. I can understand how we might feel sympathy towards this Tibetan issue but these games should be considered separate.
I am not sure that the Olympics have ever been that separate from politics.

A quick search on Google image using these terms "1968 Olympics" and "1936 Olympics" reveals some very interesting images.

The first image includes gold and bronze winning USA athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos and silver medal winning Australian Peter Norman.

The second is of gold winning USA athlete Jesse Owens, silver medal German Athlete Lutz Long and bronze medal winning Japanese athlete Naoto Tajima.
So what's the point of olympic when the host country itself fails to "try and bridge the gap between different cultures" even in its own?
If we are going to start going in this direction with China I think the decision to hold the games there should have never been made in the first place. It`s not like we all of a sudden realized that China was fucked up. It`s a well known fact that China has always had some major human rights issues. It was stupid to even allow them to be considered for the O Games. But now that they have been chosen it is even more stupid to start crying boycott at this late time. Our time to protest the games in China happened a long time ago. It is almost like this was a set up to give more reasons to argue and fuck up what is suppose to be a good time. #2 These types of protest are not the same as a boycott. So let everyone that wants to make a statement wear a fucking ribbon on
their leg or something. And get on with the games.
Boycott the Chinese participation in the Paris Reveillon before. In both cases, Olympics and Reveillon, where the hope of Freedom for the chinese citizens? What a hypocrisy!
#5,
Do you think If they make a decision you can't change it?
It's about fighting: you want - you fight. Why should you obey a decision you didn't make? You say you can't oppose if they have decided for you, do you?
I'm going to stay out of this political ramble, lol ...

Now, the only reason, besides political, I would want to boycott the Olympics in China is that it's going to hinder the athlete's performance. There was an article stating that some of the athletes can't even practice outside, but had to do laps and run inside the hotel. It hardly seems fair to make athletes work in such an environment where it can cause problems especially for those with asthma.
#7 I don`t think we can change host of the Olympic games at this stage. All that can be done is to ruin it for the entire worlds population. Everyone should have considered Chinas human rights violations before it was too late to make the change and keep the games going smoothly. This is bullshit to start crying about this now. Nothing will be changed. That is just the way it is. China will crush Tibet as they have always done and no countries will do anything about it because China has too much influence on all of our countries. And you know this is true. So cry if you must. That`s about all anyone will be able to do.
I totally agree with the #8 posting by CYNDii. Also I agree with the idea that Olympic should not be taken as a political issue.
I heard that some runners have already canceled to compete on the Marathon because of the polluted environment. I personally wish athlete not to attend the Olympic game in Beijing if they care about their lives as athletes. Well...though I know it's hard for them cuz it's still Olympic game in anyways.
#7, Thanks for pointing out that I was crying,
By the way,
If a guy decided to beat a crap out of you would you give in the same moment he started attacking you or maybe the moment he made the decision?
Today's news:

China Foreign Affairs University Wu Jianmin said that some people are using certain events to demonize China. "Some forces want to contain China ... but we are 1.3 billion people. Don't antagonize us, because that will lead to confrontation. And that is bad for everyone," Wu said
But you just watch and see. No one will heed this warning. Why ? Because some people just thrive on causing trouble. Even when they know they can not win. It takes wisdom to know the proper way to approach some issues and when to back down. And this "China Olympic" issue is one of those times. On the other hand, the pollution problem is a valid reason for concern. How can anyone perform at their best when the air quality is so poor. But again...The powers that be knew all about the air problems before they picked China to host the O. For some countries It may be possible to use the pollution card to gracefully back out. But that would still offend China so there will not be many countries that go that route.
