First of all, please understand that I am not anti-military. I have all the respect in the world for the men and women who serve or have served in the forces. However, lately it seems that there is a severe lack of discipline among the troops, and the standards have fallen to an all time low. The Abu Ghraib prison torture incident, troops torturing and killing innocent civilians in Iraq, rape in Okinawa, break in Okinawa, and just the real disgusting and childish behavior that I had personally observed through the years. I grew up on a military base and and know enough that this isn't what the military is all about. However, nowadays I really start to question the leadership and standards of leaders and the US military in general. They tell us that they are of ut-most highest standards, but I don't see it anymore.
And to add more insult to injury, I see this article on CNN this morning:
Its the most disgusting act I've ever seen. Fake or not, these people need to be severely disciplined. I can't wait for more hate and comment from other foreigners in Japan. Thanks US Marines! You're making our lives in Japan much easier!
For those who haven't seen the full video on Youtube, I don't recommend it but there are still working copies all over.
What I am asking is if you, I mean if you are an American, have or had some kinds of associations with the millitary or not (former millitary, your brother is/was millitary etc).
Again, I have nothing against the US military. I just question the recent incidents that seem to be happening way too often these day. My father was in the military, and I grew up in a very tight-knit military base community who backs their troops 150%, and I doubt that that kind if love and support has changed since then. What I do doubt is the competence of some of the leaders in charge. We are at time when the US is under scrutiny because of the war and Iraq, and I feel that because of this, top leaders tend to cover up for the poor behavior and lack of discipline of our troops to keep the media attention off of the US military.
Stuff like the above mentioned 6 incidents are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what the so-called "bad apples" are doing abroad. And to close ones eyes and adamantly deny that there is a problem is the REAL problem.
Back to the subject matter, I read a comment by a military personnel who defended the actions of David S. Motari, stating that what he did is "standard military procedure". He went on to say that these mountains are full of diseased infested stray dogs that may "give away their position" or bite them and give them rabies, and that killing them is for the protection of the soldiers. If this is so, I think there are FAR more humane ways of disposing animals than to throw them off cliffs or hurl rocks at them.
I am not going to argue whether or not reposting info that is already public is okay or not. Perhaps you may want to speak to the person who originally posted it.
As far as those who are raped an killed, I agree with you 100%, but thats not the subject here. The subject is that an officer in the US Military and his colleagues blatantly abused and killed animals wit h no remorse and seemingly enjoy doing it as if it were a game. Would you feel safe if this person lived next door to you? Would you let him play with your pets or you kids for that matter knowing he did what he did?
That is a really ruthless act upon the person who did that. I think that person who did that may have serious problems have may be a threat to harm others as well.
Thanks lot for your comment. Please allow me to post a little bit of off-topic question.
Since you confessed your dad was in millitary and you lived in a base, please do me a favour of asking your dad and the millitary / ex-millitary you know about the reason why there have been almost no crimes, rapes etc. by the US military in Germany? According to your speculation, the millitary officerss and soldiers in Germany have to be super elites only. And the standards and the discipline are close to the perfect.
My guess is that there will be some more different kinds of reason.
In my humble opinion this looked authentic to me. I know the troops are under a lot of pressure and are asked to do much worse to human beings almost everyday over there but this can not be seen in the same light. That had nothing to do with the war, or politics. Even the innocent people that are killed from time to time are " aware" that they were in danger.
These poor animals are not. No one gave that jerk orders to kill every puppy he come across. And puppies ( small animals) are not threatening to kill US Marines. That is what happens when someone looses all respect for any life. The signs of real sickness. And that is what makes this so
deplorable and worthy of our concern. This guy is now loose in public. Now that should worry you.
I totally believe those guys are insane.
Nobody can JUSTIFY this kind of action at all.
Since I live on Okinawa and work on the US military base I think I know a little bit about the US military people. I have met a lof of nice people, working and serving hard for their country and their family.
However, I wonder why there are so many stupid misbehaving people in the US military. It's very sad about the bad behaviors they have done, make and use fake dollars at local stores, rape women, break-in, hit a taxi driver with a beer bottle, and so forth. How can they have those stupid ass people in the military? It seems like anybody can join the military.
I always have that question in my mind and I would appreciate if someone can answer..
Think of it this way...America grabs the "all you can be" boys from the not so best neighborhoods and lifestyles and promises that they will be something after all endured. I see many dudes that would make even you embarrassed to say that you are an American. Those dudes that create the embarrassment are the ones that serve America...I'm Canadian and even I feel embarrassed for those jackasses...I'm pleased to be Canadian.
Very true. Animal cruelty is f-ing horrific, however you look at it.
I remember two years ago there was a rash of horrific cat mutilation videos that were going around 2ch and the like, basically a Japanese guy who tortured and killed cats: Cutting off their tales, setting them on fire, then making cruel "art" with them while they were still alive in the bathtub of his apartment. I will absolutely not link to those, because honestly they still haunt me a few years later. I'm a cat lover, and I honestly wanted to find the guy and beat him up.
At the time that those videos circulated, though, it was all rage against "Japanese people", "Japanese Single Males", etc. "See what kind of people this horrible Japanese culture produces!" or "See how crazy single Japanese men can be!!!" and the like
Truth is, it's not a "Japanese single male" thing, a "Japanese culture thing" or an "American army guy" thing. It's people who are heartless enough to perform acts of cruelty on animals, and Everyone Else. I wish we could dump those sociopaths in a trash compactor, but it's not that easy.
Granted, I'm sure the man is probably morally bankrupt. And whether the dog is real or not, what he did was irresponsible. But ultimately, I'm more concerned about the lives of human beings than that of animals.
I am in the Military.. And i'll tell you what... I don't really see any difference between someone in the Military and a Civilian.. The only difference is who they work for, and their uniform. Nothing else changes..
As a Civilian I've seen many dumb ass people... And there hasn't been any change since i've joined the Military.
What difference does rank make? Nothing, it's just the same as a General Manager of some company committing some horrible crime.
The only difference is that the Military is in the Lime Light. Particularly the USA.
Just cause their in the Military doesn't change their Morals, Character, or Ethics.
Their may be small changes.. But honestly, If u are crazy from the start.. That's just the way they are going to be...
What's funny, Is you all act as if this is something new.... This has been going on as long as man kind has been around.. Why is it going to be any different now? Just cause it's the 21st Century?
Time may have changed, but people haven't...
And trying to be more strict on Marines? Have you ever thought that maybe it's because of how strict the Military is on the Marines that they Back-lash like that? Did ya ever come to think that maybe it's the stress that makes them act like that?
The leadership? Have you ever been yelled at by a Gunnery Sargent or a Staff Sargent? I sure as hell have, It's the scariest shit you'll ever experience. I'm in the Navy, and i don't even want to deal with Marine officers or Senior Enlisted.
Besides locking them in a room and not allowing them to go anywhere, that's about as strict as you can get. That's just as close to being inhumane as the acts that some of these people committed.
And i've been around Marines just going through schooling. They are just as crazy.
All in all, Ya have to be pretty crazy in the first place to be a Marine. Although, Don't get me wrong, I respect Marines, cause i sure as hell don't want to be in their place.
And no, I don't think what they did was right, and i believe it makes people like me look incredibly bad. But honestly, There is only so much you can do about it.
N e hu, Just my two cents... take it however u want...
Please somebody give me an advice if my understanding below is right.
* Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force are stationed in Japan.
(Only Marines are stationed in Okinawa)
* Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force are stationed in Germany.
Thanks for the comments and questions. And since this is an English community, please allow me to clarify something. I am not confessing anything. To confess means to disclose a secret, and my father being in the military is not meant to be a secret.
As for asking my father as to why there are no crimes being committed in Germany by US soldier, that wouldn't be possible. I haven't seen my father in over 18 years for personal reasons. And since he was stationed in Japan and California, I doubt he could answer this question anyways. However, I can speculate that the German government are a lot less of a push over and less tolerant over poor behavior by US troops. Or it could be that more quality soldiers get stationed there....not sure...
@TokyoOG
I totally agree. These poor animals have no idea that these soldiers are going to abuse or kill them when they are approached or picked up. At least humans have knowledge that US soldiers in combat situations could be dangerous or even insane and should be avoided.
@Nendo
Agree. Many of these soldiers are escaping rough neighborhoods, and or have a lack of a proper education to rationalize there behavior. However, it has always been my contention that the military are suppose to educate them, and make them into soldiers, not street punks with automatic rifles.
@Gattsu
I agree with your statement that people are people regardless of the profession and that there are good and bad people, military or civilian. But I rarely hear about civilian Americans committing such horrible crimes overseas. Its always the military. Perhaps its the media exploiting and twisting these facts to make its seem that we have sent barbarians to these countries, to rape children, and kill animals. But I believe that its for this, that we as ambassadors of the US should ALWAYS be on our best behavior and show the people of our host counties that we are descent law abiding people, and not the animals that they portray us as.
@ウィール
Underneath it all, we are the same (civilian or military), but unfortunately we can only see what our eyes show us. Perhaps underneath it all, David Motari is a descent guy who cam from a descent home, and has pets of his own. But we can't see that. All we see is what is in that video - a cruel and vicious less-than-human with no heart, who threw a defenseless animal over a rocky cliff.
I sincerely believe an officer must be a gentleman or lady. Look at the uniforms that they wear. It is that of honor and pride and it represents a country and all of the people of that country. If the military merely wanted street punks to go out and ruthlessly kill anything that moves, I doubt that they'd even bother giving soldiers medals of honor, and a decorated uniform. THATS the difference between us and the insurgents in Iraq. They have no pride, no soul, and certainly no regard for any life, but when we start doing stupid shit like this, it doesn't make us any better.

> please do me a favour of asking your dad and the millitary / ex-millitary

Is there a source for this information? That is, do we know that troops in Germany commit very few crimes? It seems to me more likely that they commit an average number of crimes, like everyone else, but it's just not news.
#31 Amber.. Life is life. And senseless slaughter is wrong. We kill to survive, for food, anything else (including for sport in my opinion) is totally unacceptable. This goes for both Humans and Animals. When we start drawing that line is when the confusion and problems start. We can`t say this was less of a crime because it was a puppy and not a human. I know this is the way many people think but that does not make it right.
The us marines are....at best....fucking useless.... i've worked with the in afghanistan for the past 2 months and they destroyed all the confidence building with the locals. we did in the 3 months prior to them arrive.
i have no respect for the US army and i hope those guys get what's coming to them!!!
I have heard about once this long time ago somewhere by somebody (I guess on TV) ......And then a few weeks ago again, a TV caster (TV Asahi 10 o'clock news) mentioned the same thing. The TV caster heard about this from a German journalist (I donot know the name).
I wanted to hear regarding this from the actual military-related people, as well. Do you remember a German guy? at another thread? I forgot his? name. To Tell the truth, I wanted to eagerly hear from him? regarding this......
Also, US military are amagingly stationed in Holland, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Belgium, too (I donot know which force(s) - Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines - are stationed there.) I want to also hear from them regarding the crimes, rapes by the US military.
I haven't had time to read through all of these posts... so what I want to say may have already been said.
There's sick people everywhere and in every country, it just so happens that the US and the US military in particular are under a microscope... so every action done by everyone associated with them will be scrutinized and blown way out of proportion. Yes, that Marine did a very disgusting act, but I guarantee you that he isn't the first to commit the crime of animal cruelty. Similarly, the soldiers in Japan accused of rape... are you telling me that Japanese nationals haven't also committed the same crimes? Let's not even limit it to Japan. All over the world people do these acts... but because someone is associated with the military it makes headline news all over the country. In the US, a drunk driving accident that leaves people dead would hardly be worthy of national news. Yes it's a sad event, but the fact of the matter is... it happens all the time. But when someone from a minority group such as the military or gaijins in general in Japan commit a crime, it makes national headline news. I don't see that as fair reporting, why don't people around the world place the same importance on the exact same crimes committed by the local nationals. Get off your high horses and admit it... the military is not the only ones committing these crimes, they are simply the only ones deemed worthy of bad publicity.
oh, I forgot.
US military is stationed in UK, too.
Possibly, in Canada and Australia, too.
Are there any crimes, rapes by US military there??? I want to hear from the people there regarding this.
Please read what I wote above. It answers you questions or comments. But basically yes, we (foriegners) are under constant scrutiny, and ots because of events like this...that is why we need to be on our best behavior. If the japanese locals choose to committ crimes, that's their choice and their problem, not ours. But when foriegners committ crimes, its everyones problem. Fair or not, that's the way it is, and since we are the guests, we have to repect that.
Oh and by the way, I don't know what news your watching or reading, but crimes committed by locals do reported. Rapes, murders, and robberies... it just seems worse when its done by foriegner.
Some of these bases are used by more than one branch of the military and some are also shared with the host country military. For instance, Atsugi base in Kanagawa, is actually a Japanese Self Defense Force base that Japan allows the US to also use. It's half US, half Japanese.

War has never been pleasant - just consider some of the past actions of the Japanese when invading China...this is the nature of war and war is unfortunatley inevitable, it is human nature and sadly cannot be avoided.
These days we have Media coverage of war and we consider ourselves to be "civilised" so are offended by the brutality portrayed on our TV screens, It is important to remember that this brutality is nothing new, it has been around since humans climbed down from the trees and learnt to hit each other over the head with rocks - get used to it - it wont change.
Would you please give us info regarding the crimes, rapes against the british people by the US military, as you seem to live in UK (although I donot know how many years you live there...)? Plus, if there are the crimes, rapes there, providing an additional info upon which force (Army, Navy, AirForce, Marines) commited those would be really appreciated also.
#33...I highly disagree, there is a diffrence between military and civilian, the military should hold themselves to a higher level than everyone else, whether or not you do is your decision but if you don't understand that maybe you shouldn't be in the military.
I think the facts may be skewed a slight bit considering Japan is a pretty closed society unless of course, you're gaijin.
Having lived in Japan, I would also assume that a Japanese woman is more likely to keep her mouth shut if she's raped by another Japanese vs a gaijin. But of course that's just an assumption, so I won't raise that into debate.
Let me further add.... regardless of the facts or my assumptions, I''m not denying or condoning the heinous acts of the US servicemembers. It's inexcusable and shame to their entire country.
No idea regarding the number.
I just presented the perspectives you should look at so that you can analyze the (detailed) nature of the crimes by the US military and obtain the prescriptions to those kinds of crimes, whereas your comparison will not.
Additionally, the comparison below will be interesting as well. The comparison between
The number / ratio of the crimes, the rapes commited by US military against the locals in Japan
and
The number / ratio of the crimes, the rapes commited by US military against the locals in other countries such as UK, Germany, Holland, Italy etc.
It seems marines outside USA is stationed only in Japan. This makes me wonder if the crimes, rapes by US "military" in Japan are commited by Marines mostly???
