English _is_ one of the official languages, but if my experience is any indicator, most people speak local languages far more often than English. I've been to Bombay (and a few other cities). It wasn't hard to get by in English, but it was not an "English-speaking" environment either.
If you want to stick to Asia, the Phillipines is probably a better place in terms of practicing English. In Metro Manila, almost everyone understands English. :)
Guam, if you closed your eyes you would think you were in Japan. I would recommend the US or Australia. But not Hawaii because there are so many Japanese tourists I felt like I was in Okinawa and not in an American state.
I don't think it really matters all that much, but
I'd say well done for choosing to go alone.
A lot of people think it's better to travel with
friends. They have the whole "someone to share it
with" philosophy.
I prefer to travel alone. It's funny but when you're
overseas and you look lost, if you are with someone
nobody will come up to you, but if you're alone
they'll trip over each other in the race to come
up and help you.
Yeah man, you got guts to travel alone. I think it is great you want to challenge yourself. Just make sure you take all the necessary precautions first. As for places.. too many to name. What do you like? Nature or city? touristy places or the best kept secrets?
If you want to learn/speak english at abroad trip by yourself, I do not recommend the Guam. Because, there are many japanse and japanese speaker in Guam. Of course, in case of your purpose that the sightseeing and marine sports such as snorkeling, SCUBA and so on, it would be good for you. I think, Singapore is suitable place and my recommend to get the english skill. Good Luck!
I think LA is not a good place for Japanese to study English because there are many Japanese in LA.
Around Santa Monica, West LA area, and Torrance, Gardena, I saw so many Japanese.
But if you try not to join Japanese communities or not to make Japanese friends, any places would be good for you to improve English.
I'm not quite sure on the Meaning of going abroad. Do you mean Studying or Just for Pleasure?
I'll act as if your talking about studying.
Singapore, Guam, and Hawaii are not very suitable places in my Opinion.. Being, They arn't great English speaking communities. And also have VERY large Japanese Communities.
Australia and other places might be okay..
But the accent and grammar to their English is a little bit different.
(So it depends on the type of English you want to learn)
LA is a good place. But yes, The Japanese Community is very large there.. But that's simple to avoid.
Although, I think San Diego is a great place. The Japanese Community isn't too large. But if your feeling homesick there are many great places to buy Japanese Food's, Drinks or Movies..
Also, There are some good schools around here to study English such as "ALI" (American Language Institute) That's if you want a Language School.
There are also many other Language Schools in Downtown San Diego..
There are also some really good Colleges such as SDSU, UCSD, Grossmont and others.
But, Where you study doesn't truly matter. What matters is you Attitude towards your studying. I've met many Japanese People in San Diego whose English never improves because they don't try hard. But there are many others who try very hard and increase their Skills within 6 months.
My suggestion to you, Is to search around Mixi and find communities that have people who are Japanese that have studied overseas. I believe they can give a much better idea of places to study. More than any Foreigner can.
But, If you have any questions about San Diego, Please feel free to ask anytime =]

if you really wanna be able to speak in english、you should go somewhere where no japanese are. if you go somewhere touristy then you would ended up be in a japanese community which wont make you be able to learn real english. anyway whats your plan? are you gonna go to school, or what?

I am glad to be able to read your serious opinion.
My time to go abroad is only one week (because of my job).
You should enroll in a class that is thought in english. Something you might enjoy, like cooking etc.. a hobby. You will be forced to learn the language in order to pass and get something from the class. If you join an english class in the states the class will be full of people that can`t speak english and that will limit you. Cooking on the other hand has nothing to do with language but you will need to communicate with the instructors and class mates in english all the time.
If you had a motivation studying english, You could study in Japan!! You don't have to go abroad.
However If you try speaking English with foreigner and travel oversea, you go!!
My recommendatoion is India.
There is awesome!!Everyone speaking English is full of slang or inglish.
You will be able to speak Japolish!!
I agree with TokyoOG.
