I'm a little angry... I just now came back from the convenience store. There were 5 cars outside with their engines running. One of which, had two young kids inside playing!!!! (If that was in Australia, the parents would go to jail and have their kids taken away!!) How many times have you seen salarymen sleeping in their cars at lunchtime with the engine and airconditioning on? Is their NO education in Japan about environmental issues? Do people not know that this behavior is killing our planet? What kind of lives will your kids have? Does it feel a little hotter this year? What's our planet going to be like in 10 or 20 years from now? What do YOU do to help save our planet?
>Simon.
I take it this thread is about saving the world.. and it's resources.. but who's gonna save you when your laying in the hospital on your death bed? Maybe... someone should switch off the life support system cause it appears to be wasting energy...
Well.. to add fuel to the fire.
I often leave all my equipment on 24/7. There are about four PC systems, with cathode ray tubes, each consuming about 75-100watts of power every hour... then there are the all the PC's, server and networking nodes, each with it's 400-600watt PSU's and I leave them on... cause I can't be arse waiting for everything to boot everyday fecking day. Does that pee you off??
Honestly... dunno why you worry so much about fuel, it's only a car. You should see what's happening in China! They're not even required to economize on anything, they are allowed freely to pump poisonous, often toxic fumes into the atmosphere... If anything, companies there (in china) are causing more environmental damage per year then anything Japan will ever output.
If you guys are really seriously concerned about the environment, you'd be educating the chinese about it, not moaning, bitching and whining on some community.
Yes, education about environmental issues in Japan is crap, as is education about WW2, sex, English conversation and anything else that doesn't relate directly to university entrance exams. Sad but true.
> 19: Flux Man
but if you think about it, by idling the car, those two kids won't die from lack of air... or heat if it's on a hot summer day. it's the best if the parent bring his/her children with them to the store, but at least it does something :P
i'm rather surprised to see some people in japan even turn off their headlights or shifting the gear to neutral while waiting in red light. is it normal?
also... people in japan are probably more environment-friendly compare to the states. i mean, i can't go anywhere without my car here at california, but if i were in japan, i go everywhere with my bike + public transportation...
Im my opinion, evironment-wise, the Japanese can be the most hypocritical people I have seen. The have strict recycling programs and expensive fees for owning a vehicle, but on the other hand they waste an extroadinary amount of resources. I have never seen, before I came to Japan, 2 or 3 sets of packaging for chocolates or cookies or other food items, and the absence of the idea of reusing or selling old appliances. It is actually quite fascinating.
i do admit that they have one of the fanciest packaging on things like snacks and candies. but then... if they recycle all those stuff, doesn't it making up for it?
i hate that strict recycling rule though. i can't throw away trashes on my own any more when i go back there. on the other hand, at my place in the states, we have "recycle bin" but we put all recyclables in one bin - paper, plastic, containers, etc... i sometime wonder if people are really recycling after taking them away... :/
lynne: recyling has a lot of economic elements to it besides 'care for the environment'--and japan has the giant issue of lack of space that would contribute to it. So i'd be a bit coy about applauding the recyling like that (and i'm an ardent 'sustainability' advocate'--i just think everyone should be doing it insofar as possible).
also, most of the wrapping materials aren't recyclable.
Flux, you are right about the contradictons, and it certainly is insteresting. But i guess i'd still take the 'deep contradictions, but with effort' as opposed to the half-ass attempt (if attempted at all) in the US.
ウルトラネオ★ is right about the china bit. It is amazing what lengths they can justify under the need for 'economic development'. I guess its a relic from the Maoist era: human progress at the cost of human lives.
I'm all for preserving the environment, when it isn't inconvenient to me in any way. Aircon in a hot place,is very very nice, so the environment can kiss my ass in this scenario.
As for whoever said that cars use more gas when idling, how?
Air gets into the engine based on throttle body position, which is closed at idle, so very little air is getting in, thus very little is flowing by your MAF sensor, and as a result, very little gas is being dumped into the engine PER cycle. The RPM that your motor is running at, determines the amount of cycles that take place within a specified time. Which is again lowest at idle. So LOW throttle opening, plus LOW rpm = LOW fuel consumption.
Sure, it's not efficient because you're not actually going anywhere, but you're definitely using less fuel than any other operating mode. This coming from an actual engineer.
I definitely don't disagree with you at all about that. However, that fact that fuel is being used when the car isnt going anywhere is a waste. Depending on the wait time, the most efficient way is to just turn off your car. lol
>Simon..
when your in Hospital, let me know where your staying, then i can come pull the plug. Then i can say i did my part regarding 'saving the environment' - plus, it'll be my pleasure. 笑
Is it really all that safe to leave your car with the engine running in Japan? It may be in the countryside, but I can't picture myself doing that in Tokyo.
Satefy issues aside, I totally agree with Simon. Letting your engine run while the car is stationary is a total waste of gas because whatever amount of gas you're using won't get you anywhere.
Solarian;
are you taling about a Carb. because a normal car with an FIP doesn't do that.
air is regulated by the speed of the crank shaft. unles you have a turbo.
and lets not remember, america also waste a lot of fuel but driving SUV's to the mall or to collect kids from school.
they drive in an 8L engine with a top speed of fuck all and 0-60 in a few days. where as, lets be honest, the europeans are probably the most green in the world along with the japs and korean. I still think china and america are the worst in the world for wasting energy
Uhh, what's it take to get people to understand the term "Jap" is offensive? I used to think all Japanese and nikkei were highly offended by the term, but now I think a lot of native Japanese are just ignorant of the demeaning origins of that particular abbreviation.. Could we all stop using that word? Please?
But back to topic, the difference in fuel economy in Japanese or European cars from American cars still doesn't justify the energy used to idle a car for an hour.. 5 or 10 minutes I might understand. You're tired, you're resting, but wouldn't it just make more sense to go inside and use the shade in the house and the air conditioner there?
If you can't get your butt out of a car to take an air conditioned nap it's just being lazy, unless you have no air conditioning in your house when the temperature is 35 degrees Celsius inside, which makes you stupid and cheap. It's time to dig yourself a cellar.. IMO
Quote: "are you taling about a Carb. because a normal car with an FIP doesn't do that.

Err... All cars that I'm aware of have a throttlebody: carbies, fuel injected, even drive by wire fuel injecteds, and direct injection ones. The speed of the crankshaft is more of a result of the air taken in, than a control system for it.
50 degrees!! Jumpin' Jehosephat, that's life on frickin' Venus! That's just not human.
Somedays, I feel truly privileged to live in Canada. Summer temperatures hardly ever top 33 degrees in S. Alberta. Average summer daytime temperatures are about 26-27 degrees and brisk evenings of 17-18 degrees.
I tell ya, with the greenhouse effect happening, hot countries are definitely not going to get more comfortable.
that weather is what i'll be suffering everyday when i'm in afgan later this year, so just count yourself lucky...especially since we don't have air con and when we drive our vehicles, we're sat right next to the engine with a thin wall for heat protection.
In the summer, Iraq and afgan hits 50-60 every day.
So just spare a thought yeah. The only reason we go there is to fuel your 8Litre SUV's
"I think the record in Australia is 57 Degrees in the top part of south australia near the northern teritory boarder."
Death Valley in the US has the record for longest consectutive period of hot weather with several weeks of 57 degree weather. Otherwise Libia holds the record for hottest mean weather with an average of 37C, more than Iraq or any other mentioned places ;)
There are "campaigns" (we know how much the Japanese love their slogans) about idling, the issue being that its gone the opposite way. Cars, trucks and buses TURN OFF THEIR ENGINES at traffic lights!?!? Ofcourse everytime you start your engine unburnt fuel, which contains more toxins and pollutants than properly combusted fuel, comes out of the exhaust, and it creates more wear to the engine and components.
If you have any questions as per the relevency of this topic, please watch the movie "An Inconvienant Truth"!!!
Judging by the information in that film....Japan has less than 50 years left before it is 75% under water...
The polar ice caps are melting!!! People need to wake up!!!!!
Also, while we moan and bitch about problems we've caused....please look at the CHINESE and UNDER-DEVELOPED countries!!!
For one, believe it or not, the Chinese polute less than the USA!
Furthermore...it is the developed countries (i.e. Japan, USA, Canada, etc.) that sell old technology to under-developed countries, further causing environmental destruction!
The biggest things we can do right now are-
Be environmentally aware inside your own home...that includes ditching your gas guzzling SUV!
Stop selling used cars, computers, and other scrap appliances to countries like North Korea!
They in turn use them again, and further the problem of global warming.
Believe it or not, China is more aware of environmental issues than you think. The only thing they need to improve upon are issues dealing with human rights.
global warming is indeed a series and real issue, but 'an inconvenient truth' is a very suspect guide. You would be far better off with other, more reputable sources....
The Inconvenient Truth, is conveniently false. A lot of the so called scientific facts are backed by people that are highly biased and in no way should be considered experts on the matter. The movie does good to draw attention to the environment and protecting it, but it does so by spouting some ultra-paranoid "we all gun die!" lies.
You need a pair of turbos for that V8, so you can raise the fuel consumption. And ofcourse a turbo timer, to prolong the life of the turbos, and let the car idle even when you're not there anymore. Only then can you be truly ballin =)
Point is, it is tooooo rude to keep engine running while you are waiting at parking lot, it is just ANNOYING to see, hear and inhaling bad air we don't need just like smoking. Please consider of others. Thanks you.
