Hi I am yaya. Sometime I guide tourists from another country around Tokyo as volunteer. Would you tell me please where your favorite places are in Tokyo? Do you have any places you recomend in Tokyo?
Akihabara seems to be a can't miss destination these days with the popularity of manga and anime worldwide. Even if they're not interested in those things, just the craziness of the whole place makes it a great tourist site.
Tsukiji fish market + fresh sushi breakfast
Shibuya (Just the crowd is enough fun usually, and don't miss 109)
Harajuku + Yoyogi park + Meiji Shrine (especially on Sundays)
Kichijoji + Inokashira park
Sumo (if there's a tournament)
↑some combination of above are usually in my tour guide itinerary for visiting friends from overseas.
When I was at Zojoji, Strange feeling came surrounded by main hall, green, high buildings, and Tokyo tower. This mixed-up style might be the charactaristic of Tokyo.
Another candidate is Rikugien(Komagome). Among several Japanese gardens, the mangificence would be great. (The fact this is private(built by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu) garden from Edo era also made me impressed.) Especially recommeneded in seasons of read leaves .
One place I like to take foreigners is アメ横(Ameyoko). It has a different atmosphere from other places in Tokyo and people tell me it reminds them of the "old days" when Japan wasn't very wealthy.
I think typical places for tourists to visit in Tokyo are Ueno park, Asakusa, Imperial Palace, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Tokyo Tower, Ginza, Odaiba etc. However, I dont like these kinds of places so much. If I was to take a guide around tokyo, I would like them to show me somewhere different in tokyo, maybe what the guidebook doesnt mention or a specific place that the guide thinks I might like after talking to me.
I personally like Kichijoji, Odaiba, Kawagoe, Yoyogi koen/Meiji Shrine.
If they want to experience 'wierd' Japan, I found Shibuya/Harajuku more culture-shocking than Akihabara. These days most of the things in Akihabara can be seen in America/UK.
Asakusa Shine.. or any Shrine, for that matter..
a really local bar... or a strip bar..
Japanese Museums, Natural History and Japanese Art Gallery
and other places where there are non or few tourists..
Actually, can I ask is the Asakusa market still
there? And if they are, are they open every day?
I'm hopefully going to be in Tokyo in October...
I'll be training at least once a day, but I'd
like to do a bit of shopping.
Actually my tabi are looking very sorry at the
moment, does anyone know a good martial arts
supply store in Tokyo?

Hmm.. When I was there on New Years Day, there was a market selling loads of new year related goodies... I thought it's set-up for the occasion, not sure is it there at other times. Anyone know better??
