Racism, I would like to understand why there is so much racism all over the globe, and how can we begin to hate another race than ours. When I was studying in my country (Switzerland), I couldn't feel it, out of 25 students, 7 were swiss, so in such an international enviroment, it was impossible to become racist. So it is hard for me to understand why can many people be that racist against my color of skin or my origin (or others). Once at my dojo, one guy told me to f***k off and go back to my country, I was so shocked as while he was screaming at me (in Japanese) nobody reacted, we were about to fight when the other members of the dojo had to stop us. After it, out of 20 people, only one took my defence. Why? I really would like to do something against racism, so if you know any association here in Japan, let me know about it.

Jamn, we have very different point of you, and as you seem as stuborn as myself, it's not point to argue forever. But one last thing, when play a football game, do you use your hands to score? Well its the same for muay thai or kickboxing, knee in the face is not allow during training! Even in Karate tournments its not allow as it is too dangerous, I did a couple of tournments in Japan, and it was not allowed.
I think we all understand now how it feels to be categorised. But Im not really sure if mistaking where someone is from equates to racism.

みーちゃん＞I have to agree with Sergio. Japanese and Chinese are both asian, your skin is the same color. And I understand you have ethnic and cultural differences. The fact is though I cannot tell what country another white person is from just by looking at them. My ex-girlfriend (Japanese) told me that when she goes to Australia sometimes Chinese people mistake her for Chinese, and start coming up to her and asking directions. So what does that say? Asians cannot tell the difference sometimes just by looking so why should you be getting pissed when white or black people make the same mistake? Calm down and give people a break. It would be like me getting pissed everytime someone assumes because I'm white I cannot speak Japanese or use chopsticks or eat sashimi. It's annoying sometimes but it is no reason to throw a fit.
This is something that happens all over Japan and many of you will say that I dont need to go to sleezy establishments in the first place, but I just happen to like going to sleezy establishments and when I feel like it I want to be able to go there without being refused entrance because I am not Japanese. But this is a common practice over here. My money is the same color as everyone elses money. In Nurenburg I was refused entrance to a popular underground spot because I was not German. I dont know if my color was an issue at that time or not, but I suspect it was not helping. I was born into racism in my own country. And you do get used to it unfortunately.
I was expecting racism when I came here, so i am not suprised when people give me dirty looks on the subway, or street, i wasnt surprised when a man laughingly flung a racial slur at me in front of his girlfriend. I am surprised when people think that i am a prostitute and try to solicit me (the picture in my profile is not how i dress in japan I teach english at a preschool, so it's jeans and t-shirts).
Even the japanese boy that i am dating is racist sometimes, but he might have some actual reasons... He dislikes that native english speakers come here without knowing a word of japanese and then speak english to people in stores on the street, ect, like everyone everywhere speaks and understands english. I can see how this would be annoying, but to cause such hatred and fear just seems foolish.

I disagree with this aprt of your statement. Demi-god? Please. Amusing life form is more like it. I get the feeling that foreigners are treated more like a pet than a human being. The demi-god status thing is delusional. I think that foreigners get away with stuff because the domestics think that foreigners don't know any better, much like an owner has to clean up after his dog's mess. We like to think demi-god, but actually it is demi-dog. We are tolerated more than idolized. It is a fundamentally racist and xenophobic way to treat people, obviosuly, but I think that most foreigners take advantage of this and work it for themselves. YOu take the good with the bad.
Otherwise how would you explain the latter part of your statement: "having random men come up to you in the street and pinch your boobies while asking HOW MACHI??? " I don't think people are treating you very nicely if they are doing that.

The North American female (obviously regardless of race) is too stingy with the poon; they are hung up on sex, in a bad way. They set the bar very high for sex. A man has to work more than he really has to in order to spend the night with a woman, especailly the sub-species New York chick. Watching NY men go through all the hurdles and jumps and leaps he has to do to get some in NYC is both amusing and pathetic. Sometimes it is just easier to go to another country where the women understand that sex is just sex. If the fear of the North American female is that by giving it up thay played all their cards, that the man will just take off, then the woman really does not have much to offer outside of sex to the man. If the woman has a lot more to offer, the man will stick around. I have been fortunate enough that I have been able to weed out the uptight women (90%) and managed to hook up with woemn in the 10% that are really sexually liberated.
Japanese women, or actually most females outside of North America realize that sex is just sex and is a need for both men and women. I think that is why Japanese women, or most women outside of North America, give it up a lot easier.

I used to get very upset to here the words " Ben Johnson", or "Carl Lewis" when young Japanese people saw me walking down the street. Than time went by and it changed to Bob Sapp!! And how many times have you heard, " Herro I dont speak english!" Than way the hell are you talking to me!! is what I felt. Now there doesn`t seem to be anyone in the spot light that they want to call me, but Michael Jackson is still available.
And as far as the Poonie is concerned. I think that has a lot to do with the first impressions. Women can tell right away if they want to give you some. If they are not in heat you can forget it no matter how good you might look. But if they are ready for it, and the opportunity is there, you will be laid.

I think that to get past racism, we'd need to be able to laugh at it.
I laugh over the fact that I'm asian all the time. I joke with my friends that I have Rice for EVERY meal and that tea cures all ails, which is why we're totally always healthy.
It's a way of getting past the small differences that defines everyone and it helps show that it's ok to acknowledge the differences and to laugh over it.

I kind of agree on Yuu-san. When I was in the States and lived there for more than 7 years, there were so many racial slurs being made for myself and others. There is not alot of stuff that one person can do about racism. Let alone to change the way people THINK and PERCEIVe.... because after all, people see what they want to see, and think how they want to think.
When I went to Eminen's concert with my asian brother, there were a whole bunch of caucasian kids, and I was so scared. Then I looked at my brother in his eyes and said, "maybe we needed to breach our skin before coming in here tonight!!"
Also, when my friends were under age and wanted to go to the club, I always told them that they were more than welcomed to use my ID.... the only problem would be though, that they were not as yellow as I was (lol)

Back in the 70s in the UK there used to be a comedy programme called 'love thy neighbour', about a white guy and his wife living next to a black couple. The show really worked and actually helped quite a lot to lend some understanding of each side of the problem. Most of the time the subject matter was dealt with fairly lightly, and both the guys really gave as good as they got, and usually both of them came out looking as daft as the other in their rivalry and name calling. Meanwhile, the two wives were the best of friends and just sat around laughing at their goony husbands. It was a good show, black and white people loved it equally, and then some twit came along, decided it was racist and politically incorrect without even really understanding it, and subsequently it was axed. It was later picked up by an Australian network, with the same character from the white couple, and they stuck him next door to an Australian, trying to get the same formula, but it didn't quite pan out as well.
I think turning something into a joke can have the effect of lessening its grip, or power, and can make people think, 'yeah, what we're doing to each other is pretty daft". Of course, I don't think the problem of racism should ever be devalued.

For example, there are people who make fun of others who are overwieght, have ginger hair, maybe lack intelligence to a greater or lesser degree, have some learning disability, etc, and they get bullied for it, or marginalised. This is just another form of racism. The motivation is the same, "You're different, you make me feel uncomfortable, therefore I hate you". I don't think racism is just a problem of skin colour.
