Well Hussain was hanged yesterday. I really disapprove of the way he did business in Iraq. Gassing innocent people, kids, families etc.. is beyond evil. And he deserved what he got. Now that being said. After watching the video of him being lead to the gallows and the rope being placed around his neck I can`t help but feel slightly sorry for him. True he caused so much grief for so many other people, but in the end what he went through must have been pure hell. Finally in the hands of the people that hated him, taunting him, humiliating him, and still he had the balls to talk trash to the last moment before the floor dropped from under him. He died like the big bad mean motha Fu### he was. And I have to give him some respect that. So finally Hussain R.I.P if thats possible.

Personally I can not feel any respect for this man. I'm certain your comments will provoke a lot of discussing. Hanging is an awful way to go but it would have been better to give him a life sentence to reflect on what he has done wrong. It would have given the Kurds the time to come to terms with their suffering and get some acknowledgment. The funny thing is that despite having so much blood on his hands it's still only a fraction of innocent life lost compared to both Gulf Wars. We seem to ignore the responsibility of a few western leaders in causing so much bloodshed... just because it is not in your face, doesn't make it any better. I doubt any of the people who decided to wage a war will ever stand still and think about even 1 of the innocent lives lost because of that decision. Anyway, one dictator gone and awaiting the new one....
I had a Jordanian cab driver yesterday who told me that Saddam Hussein will always be in his heart. He was very sad that he was hanged. He was particularly upset that they hanged him on a Muslim holiday.

I will NOT defend Saddam Hussein but I do think that invading Iraq was a DISASTEROUS mistake that the world will pay for for many years to come.

Judging by the number of daily Iraqi and American casualties there is no question that Iraq was better off under Saddam. He was the only one that could stifle the ethnic differences. "Democracy" does not even enter into it and is just a sorry excuse to pilfer Iraq for it's oil.

The only thing the US is doing is fostering hatred.
hung! not 'hanged'

anyway, yeah, it's good he's dead. it makes my life a little easier.
however in a way, it doesn't, because at least people in his country knew were they stood when he was in power.
now he's gone, the country is even worse!

but yes, we did the right thing

Sadly, it's too little, too late. Saddam Hussein was definitely a horrible dictator, but American actions in Iraq have pretty much erased any goodwill that might have been generated by his removal.

His execution now only provides Sunni insurgents with a new martyr for their cause.
I don't know- I think this will only bring bad tidings for the new year- not good ones. Saddam will eventually be seen as a martyr for the Sunni, as >>4 pointed out. In any case, yes. I did feel sorry for him when I watched the video. He died with the mantra of the muslims on his lips: There is no God but Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet.

Afghanistan and Iraq are getting worse by the day, the solution was NOT to hang the dictator and be done with it. In the future, people will live to regret this hasty descision, I feel.

http://riverbendblog.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_riverbendblog_archive.html is a good blog to read- her two writings in December alone give a good look at how Iraq is really doing.
"Anyway, one dictator gone and awaiting the new one"

This sums up everything. The execution accomplished nothing. And like TokyoOG said: "and still he had the balls to talk trash to the last moment before the floor dropped from under him. He died like the big bad mean motha Fu### he was" I can only imagine the strength Saddams supporters will draw from that. The strength to maybe strap yourself with some TNT and run into a bunch of US troops, or innocent people perhaps?

Happy New Year
58 Years ago the same thing happened in Japan.
Happy New Year to the puppet regime of Iraq.
There was Saddam Hussain,
there is Saddam Hussain (somewhere),
there will be Saddam Hussain (somewhere).

Ironic thing number 1 is :
at some point of time Saddam Hussain was a good boy (Iraq vs Iran) and had support of USA. What about Mr. Rumsfeld (as I remember, he went in Iraq at the beginning of 80s), who gave Saddam some ugly stuff, which was used to exterminate people, who were against Saddam (European countries were no better at all)? Why are there no consequences? And why USA didn't protest at time, when all of those things were happening?
After all you can call USA "partner in crime"...

Iraq (good, coz against evil Iran),
Afghanistan (good, coz against evil Russia)...
Same story. Same mistakes.

Ironic thing number 2 is :
however you look at this whole war, it was safer in Saddam's Iraq and not in "free" Iraq. Saddam was a killer, but he was not blind. There was no place for Al-Quaida in "his" Iraq.
Bush & Co are not killers, but they are blind. Start stupid war without any strategy and then be surprised with all the shit, which is now happening in Iraq.

To me, Saddam made mistake, which wasn't made by Kadafi. He didn't make a deal. And he had to pay for this.

And if not USA, then maybe in future China will make same mistake. They will find someone like Saddam & will support him... and then the will be another Iraq.
I am just so upset over all the "hate" that is clearly being generated by all this craziness. I say as one last chance (US effort) for Iraq that the US completely lock it down. No cars at all allowed on the streets at anytime. All people stay indoors indefinitely under a full month curfew. Provisions etc.. delivered to each home by thousands of UN troops. Hold new elections. Votes could be collected by the troops with special independent UN teams observing them to keep em honest. Let all the people vote again and choose their new government and then pull out all foreign troops from Iraq immediately after the newly chosen politicians take office. Who ever won would be the choice of the majority and the outside world would have to just live with that. If they destroy themselves afterwards it is not our problem. Why is it Americas job to spread democracy all over the world? Is this a Christian attitude? The same way they had to spread Christianity all over the world? How about just putting the information out there and letting people decide for themselves and come to you. Like I said I have more respect for Saddam now than I had before. Although misguided he at least really believed he was right and was not just acting a part. Can Bush say that?
Donald Rumsfeld and Saddam Hussein shaking hands, circa 1983. Somehow, I don't think Rummy will be showing up for Hussein's funeral.

I don't think it's a "Christian attitude" so much as it's American hegemonic arrogance. The war in Iraq had everything to do with flexing US power for economic and political ends, and nothing to do with "spreading freedom and democracy". That's just the BS line they feed the public and the military.
the hanging of Hussien reminds me of a story I saw on the BBC some time ago (can't remember it perfectly)....
An English Lord Justice had invited some of the newly formed Iraqi government officials and Judges presiding over the Saddam trial to London.
To show them the Tower of London....
He wanted to illustrate to them the danger of handing a death sentence down to Saddam.

A very similar situation had occured in England's history. After the civil war some members of the monarchy were put on trial for the crimes they had commited against English peasantry and so on.....
The monarchs were hung, and it caused uproar, another war, and resulted in the eventual re-instatement of the ruling classes...
The bottom line was; killing these people is a seriously dangerous proposition in such a volatile climate. Could end up achieving the opposite of what you want. Not to mention a little morally corrupt.

The tragedy of the whole Saddam situation was that I gather he was a bit of an American fan. He loved John Wayne movies and so on....
Fuck knows what the next maniac is going to be like over there, but I bet you he won't be a fan of the Americans...
Perhaps even big chums with the Iranians....

I think this really is turning into a war of the civilisations.
even tho he was the bad man that he is, i too felt sorry for him. but as a blogger his death caused a sensation in the blogsphere, so many people was talking about it, many has the uncensored version of his death on video on their blogs. of course so do i.

oops, i really mess up the forum with that long link there, sorry
The Video will not play anyway so you might as well erase it and save the forum :)
The video plays fine for me. Not that I watched it towards the end, though. As bad as Saddam was, I don't think he deserved it.
だいはど you must be outside Japan because its not playing here in Japan and I dont think its just my computer. But on the still shots of another broadcast I noticed that Saddam had 3 very clear bruises on his face that were not there when the showed the rope being placeed around his neck. I think they stopped filming, beat the shit out of him and than continued with the hanging. Just my observation. Or they kicked him in the head after he was cut down. Either way its not right.
From Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven":

-----
Kid: Well, they all had it coming.

Eastwood (as William Munny): We all have it coming, kid.

-----------

Gene Hackman (as the crooked sherrif "Little Bill"): I don't deserve this.. to die like this.. (As Eastwood levels a rifle at him)

Eastwood: "Deserves" got nothing to do with it. (Shoots Little Bill)
-----

And I guess that's the way it'll be for a lot of people for a very long time.
