If you dont mind used books, you can check the BOOKOFF. They are still bit pricy for used books compared to the states, but I think its still reasonable and you can find the store all over the place.
In Nagoya i go to BOOKOFF. Plus there is this really interesting second hand store called コレコーレ, it has a lot of English language book, I even got my copy of the Half Blood Prince there at 500yen!
I get 90 percent of my books through Amazon, and more than half of those are used books sold through the Amazon Market Place. I have bought excellent books in perfect condition for just a few dollars. If you buy several at the same time, you don't overpay on the shipping. The dealers are fast, is my experience. Usually I get my order within a week! And that's from the States. Whenever I read or hear about a book that I want, I enter it onto my Amazon Wish List and every so many weeks I buy a few books at the time from that list.
Amazon.com and Amazon.co.jp are the cheapest if you know what you are looking for. Tower records is cheaper than Kinokuniya or Book First but has limited selection. There is secondhand book store in Ebisu. They advertise in Metropolis. You should find them easily. Also you can try library! ^-^
In Tokyo, there are some second hand bookstores in Ebisu (1 minute from the station down the escalator where the car entrance is and the to the right, pass a conbini and then right again in the 3rd floor of some building. but better check metropolis for it.
And there is one in Ikebukuro called Caravan books or so :-)
Are there any second hand foreign bookstores in Kansai?
The thing about second hand books is that a lot of them are dirty. Of course it depends on the condition and a book is just a book, but personally I prefer a so-called bargain book because it has not been read through and sneezed on and dogeared (hate that!) and tossed around by somebody else.
For example the one in Ebisu I dont buy from there because so many of the books are in such poor condition. There are a couple book stores that have used books in fairly good condition, I count Blue Parrot in Takadanobaba as one of those. Great store.
Also of course Random Walk in Roppongi, which is selling totally unused books for cheap!
Wantage Books in Kobe claims to have the "largest collection of used foreign books in the Kansai area." They are in the same building as Kansai Time Out: http://www.kto.co.jp
Address: 1-1-13 Ikuta-cho, Chuo-ku, Kobe 651-0092
Phone: 078-232-4517

Directions: It's a three-minute walk from the south exit of Shin-Kobe subway station, 1 block south of OPA. Look for the corner with Yoshinoya and Daimaru neon, enter alley left of film shop

Actually, the above mentioned sites have lists of bookstores all over Japan. You can find the links at the bottom of this list: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/4824/bookshop.htm
Organized as follows:

Bookstores in Tsukuba/Eastern Tokyo Suburbs
Bookstores in Central Tokyo (excluding Jimbocho/Hongo)
Bookstores in Central Tokyo (Jimbocho/Hongo)
Bookstores in Western Tokyo Suburbs/Kawasaki/Yokohama

Bookstores in Western Japan
Bookstores in Japan (miscellaneous information)
By the way if anyone wants to know how to get to Random Walk in Roppongi its just down that street to the left of Amando. You just go down the hill, five minutes. A little hidden away . .
Hi, won't anyone let me know the name of that Bookshop in Ebisu?
I think I've been there with my friend but I really can't remember its name now as it was over 10 years ago... And I don't have a chance to get a copy of Metropolis.
I've got quite a few English books I wanna get rid of in my parents house in Japan, so I'd like to enquire bookshops if they can buy mine (still in excellent condition!) next time I go there.
Also, does anyone know if BOOKOFF would buy English books? I thought it's a Japanese chain. Or any other shops that would take books at second hand?
Takadanobaba and Ikebukuro seem to be a bit far away from me, prefer the south of Tokyo area.
Not much luck with the link above either. my bad eye? boo hoo...
I'm even looking for charity shops type. If I can't flog them that's cool. If anyone wants, I'd happily donate my books cos they just take up so much space.
Any tips, much appreciated.
Back to the original question, I like Book 1st, Tower Books, ABC, Nadiff and the basement at Parco etc. hang around there when I'm in Tokyo. (rarely buy there lol) online shopping might be pricey though a lot handier.
The shop in Ebisu is "Good Day Books"
their web page is :
http://www.gooddaybooks.com/
but it seems to be down right now. They have a good range. They also buy sencond hand books - although of course they decide which ones they want to take.
I've been to a secondhand foreign book shop in Takadanobaba. I forgot the name, but if you walk from Takadanobaba station towards Waseda University along the main street, it is about 500-700 meters down on your left hand side. It's on the second or third floor in the narrow building. Sorry, my memory is a bit vague here. They have really nice books there. It's certainly worth visiting.
Just to let you know random walk in roppongi is continuing its bargain book sale and is going to start a point system where if you buy 15 books (500 yen each) you get a free one. cheap cheap cheap.
