In about two years my fiancé and I will be living in Japan and he will need a job. He will have a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering and so would prefer to work in his field. His Japanese skills will not be good enough for him to work in a Japanese language environment. Do you have any suggestions about where we should start looking for employment?
You may be a bit a head of yourselves. In two years time everything could be different. Two years worth of people coming to Japan and filling positions before you even land at the airport.
if he doesnt mind doing software instead of hardware, theres more opportunities with better pay in english work environments at gaishikei financial firms.
Thank you for posting. We’re just trying to get an idea of the situation ahead of time so we can head in the best direction. Little changes early can make big differences later. He can program but he is not a software major, so his skills are basic.
I personally know a non-Japanese who were offered an Electrical Engineer position by Japanese company, but he did not take it because he figured he could make much more money working at the same position in the U.S.
Think about the advantage of hiring a foreign engineer in Japan. I mean, unless working in a sales representative position which involves a lot of communication and negotiation with other companies, there is no real advantage of hiring a foreigner to fill an engineer position. There are many skilled Japanese engineers who are in that field. Besides, unless he is married Japanese citizen, the company needs to sponsor him to obtain working visa, which can be a burden for the company. Time factor does not really matter because the job market in that field has not changed much for past 5 years.
What he can do is to get hired by an engineering company that has Japanese branch.
