hello there, maybe some of you may have read another post of mine about open-mic bars. But now I need help for another thing: This female friend is kind of an anime fan (not to say otaku lol), and as soon as she knew I was going to Japan for a few days, practically begged me to buy some stuff for her (she would give the money, of course!).
Well, she asked for: - A pink Card Captor Sakura bag - A bag which is basically, Doraemon's head (!!!) - and a Rurouni Kenshin black T-Shirt, preferably featuring Aoshi from Oni gang...
Now, I suppose the perfect place to buy such things would be Akihabara, but I have absolutely no idea how much these things cost in yen... I need to tell my friend an estimate of how much these things cost so she can give the money in advance before I go to Japan...
So, can any anime fan help me out here? like, a general estimate of prices, or a shop in akihabara where I might find these items?
Thank you very much for your time!!! Doumo arigatou gozaimashita! -
You don't need to go to Akihabara to get those things.
Japan itself is an actual living anime, and the type of stuff you are asking about is EVERYWHERE!!!
Akihabara just provides more of the cute girls in costumes and smelly otakus that lurk in every corner.
Because that place is filled with anime shops, there is no point in naming one specifically.
Also...beware! The price of things (unless you buy them used) is really expensive in Akihabara.
Here is my advice:
Look for 100 yen shops (like dollar store).
They sell so many anime type things!!! Daiso is a good one! And most items are just 100yen ($1)
Also- for specific items, go to the malls! Find a store like Walmart and have fun spending!!! There is so much anime stuff there and it is soooo much cheaper!
I'm estimating you will need about $60 ($6000 yen...i'm not sure what the exchange rate is now)
from your friend.
If you find that this isn't enough....then you are paying waaaaaay too much!
I think you might have a problem finding *exactly* what she's looking for, though. This has been my experience in Japan. There is a *ton* of stuff like this there so there is always the temptation to get too specific in what you ask someone for, but then it can be impossible to find those exact requirements. So you might just want to either ask her to be a *little* more general, or just tell her that you'll do your best but what you find might not be exact. I mean, a bag that's Doraemon's head? Maybe such a thing exists, but I've never seen one in any of the stores I've been in. She's sending you on a wild goose chase.
Unlike Himeko, I do think it's worth going to Akihabara. Otherwise, you're wasting even more time trying to find stuff that may or may not actually be out there. My advice is to go to Akiba, and if you can't find these items there, either tell the girl you couldn't get them or just get her something else that's similar there. Then you've got the rest of your vacation to yourself.
Believe me, I just came back from Kyoto and Tokyo, and the entire time I was there I felt like I was just shopping for other people. It gets old after a while. It's nice to just go to one place and be done with it if you can.

Yes, I also don't want to feel that I'm doing a trip just to buy stuff for other people. So I'll try akihabara and some cheap chain-stores, and try and get someone who knows the place to help out.
I already found a pic of a sakura pink bag, so I think I have an idea of what I'm looking for.
>Ophelia, thank you! That kind of bag is exactly what my friend had in mind :)
You can also try Nakano Broadway, which has alot of Anime stuff as well. If you might need assistance there, I would be glad to help you out, since I live really close by.
hmm that would be great, if I wasn't disturbing you during your work hours or something... once I check with my visiting schedule in Japan, I'll see if there's a possibility of doing that. I'll get back to you about this matter next week :)
