I always wondered. Where did this mixi beast come from? If you have to be invited, how/when did it start? If you have to be invited, it means we are ALL connected via someone...
though I don't know the real story, I guess that the people who started it just invited their friends and family (and perhaps offered invitations to complete strangers on BBSs and such), and then it grew from there.
either that or perhaps it wasn't invitation only at first?
we all seem to have a userID# so perhaps it might be worth it to try punching low numbers into the profile URL and see what the "pioneers" are like...
You mean, the minors aren't supposed to be allowed here? Not that I'm even remotely close...
I'd agree with Alex. Mixi probably started out with some kind of public review where whoever was interested was able to join in for a certain period of time, and then it moved to the current "invitation-only" model.
Come to think about it... I've been here for more than a year. Jeez, time does fly.
Abi-san, when 'beast' is added to something, it usually means something that is big, keeps growing bigger, and seems to be out of anyone's control. You sometimes hear 'we've created a monster' which is basically the same idea.
One could have said 'mixi machine' because we are locked within it...like the Matrix!!
I read a magazine article, and there are several Mixi-type communities spreading around. I don't know, but isn't Friendster the same idea?
Friendster is the same, without the journal stuff that mixi has. Ditto thefacebook which is big on college campuses now. Livejournal is/was kinda the same (they used to use an invite system too).
