once upon a time, in vatican were those who were generally perceived as "bad popes" like rodrigo borgia and giuliano della rovere. but they were the ones who produced michelangelo, da vinci, botticelli and the golden age of renaissance.

in this modern age, what is joseph ratzinger trying to produce? the dark age!

Well, I usually buy the "words taken out of the context" defense and the "manipulation of the media" argument. But this time, mmm, I don't know.

The emperor [Manuel Paleologos II of Byzantine] comes to
speak about the issue of jihad, holy war. He said, I quote:
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and
there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his
command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

That's a pretty direct statement. And yes, the Pope was apperently aware of the delicacy of the issue and described the phrases on Islam as "brusque." But come on, "brusque"?

And yes he pointed out that he was "quoting" several times, but he never agreed or disagreed with the emperor's views, and rather, said

Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the
  nature of the soul.

I mean, hello? What was he thinking?

I wouldn't call him an "empty mind," but he certainly was careless. I can't agree more with that comment by the New York Times: "The world listens carefully to the words of any pope. And it is tragic and dangerous when one sows pain, either deliberately or carelessly."
No one wants to hear the truth. If we say most terrorrist are from the middle east, and profile all middle eastern people coming through airports they call us prejudice. But the facts are there to be seen by everyone. There has never been peace in that region. And people are the cause of the problem. This is a Fact. So when does 2 X 2 not eual 4 ? If the Middle East is truly tired of this image than they need to clean up shop themselves and spare us all this bullshit. This is not a word game! People are dying!
Well, the point is, it is the fact, and it is okay for any of us to say that out loud. But when the Pope says that kind of thing in a time like this, he'll just be pouring oil on the fire. And one doesn't have to be Einstein to understand that.

I'm not saying that the Pope should be held accountable for killings of over a dozen Christians in the Middle East. But if he really didn't see this coming, then he may be in bigger problem than we thought.
