Industrial Light & Magic Animation Supervisor Scott Benza has joined the speaker line-up for the 2007 Digital Media Festival, where he will demonstrate how 10 metre-tall robots were brought to life in this year's blockbuster film Transformers, which required some of the most complex modeling and animation ever attempted at ILM.
As a Lead Animator at Industrial Light & Magic, Benza is responsible for many aspects of the development of a CG character, as well as providing creative and technical direction to animators. Some of his most notable projects have included animation and simulation work for the Rock Monster in Galaxy Quest and development work done for crash/destruction simulations for Pearl Harbor.
Benza will join Evan Jacobs, VFX Supervisor of the forthcoming Resident Evil, and Maya Master Steven Stahlberg on the program for the Australian Effects & Animation Festival (AEAF). The DMF will include four dynamic conference events, the AEAF, Digital Video, Digital Imaging and Media 2.0.
Some other highlights if the 2007 DMF program include
* Allan McKay will give insights learned from some of the recent projects he has completed, from Hollywood films to big title game cinematics, covering many of the processes and techniques involved, along with issues that arose throughout the productions.
* Maya Master Steven Stahlberg will show how to create convincing humans in CG, with a focus on the female and how to maximize attractiveness (also applicable to men and non-human creatures).

* Come on an action-packed ride with one of Australia's premier extreme sports photographers, learning the unique technical and creative demands of recording death-defying activities in the wild.
* The tapeless future is here. Find out how leading post-production companies such as Digital Pictures are structuring their workflow to handle the new tapeless file formats.
* The number of digital-cinema screens in the US could exceed the number of traditional screens employing film projection within four years. As the exhibition industry begins to lift its rate of digital-cinema screen installations find out how that impacts your choices in production.

SYDNEY : AEAF NEW SESSION - WETA DIGITAL, THE WATER HORSE: LEGEND OF THE DEEP

Weta Digital's Richard Frances-Moore will be presenting at AEAF 2007 at 9.00am on Tuesday, 13 November

Frances-Moore was animation supervisor for The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep, the latest stunning achievement in on-screen CGI animation from Weta Digital, due out in Australian cinemas on January 1, 2008.

This family-friendly fantasy film is based on the novel The Water Horse by Dick King-Smith. It tells of a a young Scottish boy named Angus who discovers a mysterious egg that soon hatches a bizarre reptilian type creature. Soon after it grows too big to be hidden within his home, it's placed in Loch Ness, where it becomes the famous Loch Ness Monster.

Animation supervisor Richard Frances-Moore, who led the pre-visualisation and animation for The Waterhorse: Legend of the Deep, says the task of creating the on-screen character "Crusoe," as the creature is known, was one of the most challenging Weta has undertaken. Crusoe occupies nearly every single shot in the film and must be shown to grow as a believable character throughout the movie.

Its creation required Weta to develop new approaches to skin dynamics and muscle dynamics.

Richard Frances-Moore joined Weta Digital in 2001 to work on The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. He began as a character animator working on Gollum then moving onto the role of senior animator, helping design and create the climactic battle sequence in The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King.

He then continued in this role for King Kong where he led the pre-visualisation and animation of several sequences in the film. Previously Richard has worked for the Lord of the Rings production company Three Foot Six Ltd as a Previs Artist creating pre-visualisations for The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and as a character animator for New Zealand television productions.

CREDITS (Richard Frances-Moore):
The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (2007) (animation supervisor)
Bridge to Terabithia (2007) (animation lead)
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) (animation supervisor: Weta Digital)

INVITATION - VES Sydney

"The Third Floor"

tricks that can make previs more convincing and more useful on-set.

Finally, before Q&A, Chris will address the future of previs in a world where the lines between film and game development are blurring.
