I wonder why foreign people use their real name and face picture for online profile especially on myspace.
How come? What do you think?

Not all of them do but I guess my question is the other way around? Why do people like to use other people's pictures and names? I guess they are worried about identity theft and privacy but I always felt people should talk to me, not someone I'm portraying. I guess there is something special about knowing someone well enough that they tell you their real name but I feel no need. I suppose one feels more free to write their thoughts and feelings if they think no one will know who they are but I'm here to know how people are for real.

If you are worried about privacy then you should know that unless you use an IP address anonomyzer, you can be tracked. Even with one you can be tracked. There is no such thing as true privacy here, only an illusion.
Hmm, I don't think using your real name means you want to be a reality TV star :)
I don't think it is a matter of online privacy. Plus, anyone can find me by looking in the phone book. I use my name and real picture because that is really me. I have no reason to hide who I am.

I'm Japanese but I think we don't have to restrict easy privacy. If someone who I haven't seen can know my name and face, I don't have any idea what they can do. Now, Japanese are too sensitive about their privacy, I think.
Hey Makiko,
I'd posted an article on my blog after a friend of mine asked me a question similar to yours, that might be related to this topic. Take a look at the story below if you like.

Thank you for your comments, everyone.
I think we can be expressive and for real without using our real names or face pictures on SNS sites.

You've seen so many pixilated (モザイク) faces and private parts in Japan.
But, in western countries, not at all. It's common sense to care about privacy in Japan.

I've heard that some jerk people copy and paste mixi users' diary and show them on 2 Channel and write evil and mean comments and criticize them.

I often see foreign myspace users post photos of their friends. I wonder if they ask their friends if it is OK.
Well i think most people dont worry about danger and stuff,

I dont mind to use my real name online.. My name alone is not going to enable people to find me.. if they wanted to! I think it is wise not to put TOO much personal information online, just because of things like identify theft and whatnot..

I think sometimes people can be a bit too suspicious about the internet. I have made and met many friends through the internet. But i have never intentionally tried to make friends to meet, so it's always been ok. It's not like i went to chat rooms looking to meet people, i think then it can be dangerous.

People from the net are no more dangerous than people in "real".

I hope i didnt go off topic.
