高校時代にウィルとアップルが「トライバル・ネイション」というダンス＋ラップ・チームを結成。後に名前を「ATBAN Klann (A Tribe Beyond A Nation)」と変え、1992年にドクター・ドレ、アイス・キューブが在籍していた伝説のヒップホップ・グループ、N.W.A.のイージー・Eが経営するメジャー・レーベル“ルースレス”と契約。しかしプログラミングと生バンドの混合サウンドでレコーディングされたアルバムは結果的に時期尚早という判断でお蔵入り、イージー・Eの死とともに契約そのものも失ってしまう。しかしウィルとアップルは、タブーをメンバーに迎え、「ブラック・アイド・ピーズ」と名も新たに再起を賭けて再スタート。ロスを中心に生バンドを率いてのライヴ活動を積極的に展開。その強力なダンスと毎回違ったスタイルで行う個性的なパフォーマンスがメジャー・レコード会社間で契約争奪戦が起こるホドの評判を呼び、その結果インタースコープが契約権利を獲得した。
