As you are well aware, the US presidential election looms in front of us and the height of political pageantry is unfolding before our eyes. I have never felt so invested in a presidential race nor so desperate for a way to process and relate to this historical moment. Because of this, I have started to produce an international performance exchange. I am contacting you because I admire your work and am inviting you to participate. The exchange will include US artists and international artists creating performances in response to the 2008 US presidential election. Each performance made for the exchange will be a public act, whether in a gallery space or on a street corner. This series of performances will mirror the theatricality of the US electoral process and track attempts to engage and affect this seemingly impenetrable stage.
Here's how to be involved: 1. Submit two images and a bio to post on the website/blog.* 2. Create a performance in response to the 2008 US presidential elections. Note: this performance must be for a live event or action. 3. Upload your instructions to the website/blog. 4. Chose a performance submitted by another artist (living in a different country) to perform/interpret. You can select from a database of online performances, or invite another artist (living in a different country) to collaborate with you. Please notify me if you are interested in doing the latter. 5. Correspond with the original author of the performance and state your interpretive intentions for the performance. 6. Perform your piece and afterwards, upload your documentation to the website/blog.**
*The website/blog for this project is currently under construction. All private contact info. will not be online.
**I am currently seeking venues for some performances and screenings in Los Angeles during September/October and I intend to produce a book documenting this process. If you are interested in participating in one of the gallery/theater events please let me know.
I look forward to hearing back from you about this by May 26th. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
