It is with sadness that I announce the death of Mr. Zhengang Zu (Norman C.K. Tsu), who was the first deaf Chinese to graduate from Gallaudet University (1955). He had been sick with pneumonia and was hospitalized in Shanghai, China before passing away on August 11, 2003 at the age of 77. Mr. Zu was born in August, 1925 and grew up in China. He enrolled at Gallaudet University and majored in Sociology. After graduating in 1955, Mr. Zu worked in Singapore for one year before returning to China to teach at the Shanghai Technical School for the Deaf where he worked many years. He struggled years through the Cultural Revolution before retiring. Since his graduation, he returned to Gallaudet two times for a visit, saying that he loved Gallaudet for giving him an opportunity to advance his education. A funeral will be held August 15 in Shanghai.
中国語『上海聾唖青年技木学校・・・、退休之前・・・出国留学的・・・文化大革命大紛糾。』 上海聾唖青年技木学校の英語では『the Shanghai Technical School for the Deaf』の事。文化大革命大紛糾とは『毛沢東の中国文化大革命が彼の人生をメチャクチャにしてしまった』という意味もとれる。
