Anyone knows anything about the doctoral program of TESOL in Japan?

I have an MA degree in TESOL in Taiwan
and now I'm considering going somewhere in the world to pursue my Ph. D.

Japan comes in the list
as there is an impressive amount of published journals
authored by Japanese researchers.

I'm not familiar with the schools in Japan at all,
so my questions are:
(1) What schools offer quality doctoral programs of TESOL in Japan?
(2) Are the courses taught in English or Japanese?
Will fluent Japanese be required?

ps. my research interest is mainly in writing,
and I have a friend who's also interested in apply schools in Japan.
His research interest is in culture and vocabulary acquisition.

Thank you!

I am one of the graduates of Temple university Japan (the
TESOL doctoral program).

The qualities of the courses are really good, because professors are
really "profesional" and famous all over the world (J. D Brown, for example).

After graduation, you get ED.D instead of Ph. D, but there are almost no diffrences between Ed. D and Ph.D. Nobody says PH.D is better than Ed.D.

Temple University Japan has three schools, in Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka.

So you can choose one of them.

Tokyo school has a good facilitites, for example, a large library and two good computer rooms.

It might be useful for you to call TUJ graduate office. You can soon find
what courses are offered in each of the three terms.

Thank you so much for the information! It did give me a clue as to which school I can look for.

I am a bit concerned about my japanese as neither me nor my friend speak Japanese. Besides finding an English speaking advisor, if the courses are taught in Japanese or if the discussion is in Japanese mostly, I am sure there might be some problems~
What about Sophia University's TESOL program? It started just a few years ago, but in this university there are a wide range of courses in applied linguistics held by some famous professors including Kensaku Yoshida.

Also, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies is worth considering. It has begun the TESOL course a couple of years ago. TUFS is one of the most renowned universities for a wide range of language education.

I think, in both universities, some knowledge of Japanese will be preferred, but there are not a few foreign students who don't understand Japanese well. You don't have to be too much concerned about your Japanese skills. Most of the students understand English and, your Japanese will soon be better, if you are in a Japanese speaking environment for a while.
You may as well want to include International Christian University (Mitaka, Tokyo) in your list. You can expect most of supervisors fluent in English there.
Dear All,
Thank you very much for kindly and nicely replied to my question.
I've passed the info I gathered here to my friend.
As now he's already in a doctoral program in Taiwan,
I think he might apply earlier than I do.

Dear non non san,
Thank you for the info about Asia TEFL.
Too bad that I am having a full time job now,
so it's really unlikely for me to get time to travel to Bali.
I just took a look at the website.
I'll keep myself updated with it.
Probably I'll be able to make it next year or something.
Thanks anyway!
