KUALA LUMPUR: The KL’06 Fespic Games Torch Run entered its final stage yesterday as it crossed the Selangor border into Kuala Lumpur.
Selangor Youth and Sports Committee deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Kuris Mohd Nor and about 300 runners, including the national disabled athletes, carried the torch from Petaling Jaya and handed it over to Kuala Lumpur Youth and Sports director Aziz Hamid, who represented KL Mayor Datuk Ruslin Hassan.
On hand to witness the ceremony, at Kota Darul Ehsan, was the Games championship director, Datuk Zainal Abu Zarin.
From Kota Darul Ehsan, 200 people took the torch to the Seputeh Parliamentary constituency.
The torch run will then pass through 10 other constituencies in the city before ending at Dataran Merdeka on Nov 23.
Zainal said: “We’ve achieved the objective in promoting the KL’06 Fespic Games throughout Malaysia and hope the people will support the event. The run was also aimed at making the people aware of the inspiration, determination and will of disabled athletes to compete in international sporting events.”
The national-level torch run was flagged off on May 7 in Labuan.
The Games in KL is the last edition of the Fespic Games in the sports calendar of disabled athletes before they become the Asian Paralympic Games.
Forty-seven countries have confirmed participation in the Games scheduled for Nov 25-Dec 1. – Bernama
