James Sargent of Sushi 101 shares the secrets of the special sauce.
FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 23, 2005--Something's fishy in the Florida Panhandle where making sushi has suddenly become so much more. James Sargent, master sushi chef of Yamato Restaurant, finally gave in to fans who begged him for years to make a how-to video. Little did he realize, the how-to video would soon turn into an irreverent over-21 drinking game being described as The Food Network-meets-The Daily Show.
"I was uncomfortable on camera, and as I was explaining how to make sushi, I didn't realize I was saying 'Just like that,' every minute or so," Sargent explains. "The video producers thought it was hilarious, and even renamed the video Sushi 101: Just Like That. They overcame the gaffe by turning the whole video into a comedy bit with pop-up graphics recommending that viewers eat a sushi every time I said it. I started passing out video screeners to friends, and the next thing I knew, there was a whole counterculture out there toasting every time the pop-up sushi graphic appeared. Answering demand, the producers created this new drinking game version. I tell people, 'Make sure you're ordering the right version when you visit the Web site, sushi101justlikethat.com!"
Producer Denise Dorman of WriteBrain Media adds, "We had to do something. He says 'just like that' 83 times in 58 minutes of video. It hearkens back to the 'Hi Bob' game we used to play in college while watching reruns of The Bob Newhart Show. In today's market, I know viewers who have turned The Food Network into a drinking game, toasting every time Alton Brown says 'kosher salt.' This is no different." The makers of the video have issued very stern warnings not to toast every time the video suggests it, "or take turns amongst a room of 20 people," Dorman recommends.
Adds Sargent who is half-Japanese and has rolled over 1 million sushi rolls in his 20 years at Yamato Restaurant, "We all watched in horror one morning as actress-turned-sushi chef Tracy Griffith rolled sushi on The Today Show. It was a real mess. I really need to send her one of my DVDs. I'd challenge her to a sushi duel...just like that!"
