BODYVIVE™ is the new group exercise-to-music program from Les Mills.
It’s a low impact, 55-minute class, integrating aerobic exercise for heart fitness, resistance training for strength and stability, and stretching and mobility work.
Like the other LES MILLS™ programs, BODYVIVE™ incorporates multiple tracks of inspiring music and is delivered by motivating instructors.
Who’s it for?
BODYVIVE™ is especially suited to active adults in their 40s, 50s and 60s who belong to health and fitness clubs.
It’s also suitable for group exercise beginners and anyone who will enjoy this integrated exercise option.
What does it offer them?
BODYVIVE™ offers the core benefit of all LES MILLS™ programs: namely an enjoyable, motivating pre-choreographed group fitness experience that delivers real fitness results.
Specifically, BODYVIVE™ is designed to deliver:
Improved muscular strength and endurance Increased heart fitness Improved flexibility and range of movement Better agility and balance Improved posture Weight loss through elevated calorie consumption Reduced risk of bone and joint degeneration General wellness and “feelgood” benefits
Why has Les Mills created BODYVIVE™
BODYVIVE™has been created in response to shifting demographics among gym members which has seen baby boomers become the fastest growing group and in response to interest among Les Mills’ worldwide distribution agents in a low-impact exercise option using the Les Mills formula.
This demand has been validated by independent surveys of club owners and instructors showing a program targeted at mature adults to be the preferred next group fitness offering from Les Mills.
How is the program structured?
BODYVIVE™ starts with a simple warmup and continues with alternating 'heart fitness' and 'functional strength' blocks before a final block of core and restorative exercises.
The basic structure is fixed but the moves and music will change when a new class is released every three months.
The structure for the first BODYVIVE™ classes is as follows:
HEART FITNESS 1. Rise & Shine 2. Connect and Go 3. Dance Cardio
FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH 4. Balance & Leg Strength 5. Upper Body Strength
FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH 8. Hip and Upper Body Strength
CORE AND RESTORE 9. Tai Chi & Yoga 10. Ab Strengthener 11. Back Care 12. Release and Restore
What equipment is used and why?
Balls and resistance tubes are used in some of the tracks because of the opportunities they offer to exercise the body in different ways. Resistance tubes also give participants a wide range of workout intensity and they are currently the most popular form of small equipment being used in clubs for mature participants.
Handweights may also be used as an option in some tracks.
Will BODYVIVE™ burn calories? How many?
Yes, BODYVIVE™ can increase caloric expenditure in participants, depending on their choice of workout intensity.
How fit do I need to be to do BODYVIVE™?
First-timers do not need to be fit - just physically active and able to move freely. Les Mills recommends that people obtain the advice of a medical professional before starting any fitness regime.
How often should people do BODYVIVE™?
There is no prescribed frequency. Les Mills suggests three times a week, in conjunction with other physical activities.
What type of music is used and why?
BODYVIVE™ is choreographed predominantly to popular, mainstream music from the 1960s and 1970s. The music is easy to listen to and familiar to BODYVIVE™ participants.
What’s in it for clubs?
BODYVIVE™ is a distinct new Les Mills offering for the fastest growing category of club members (over 40s) and a powerful attraction for new members.
BODYVIVE™ can also be a focus for building a sense of community - and thus loyalty to their club - among regular participants.
The release of a new class every three months presents clubs with the opportunity to re-launch the program to existing and potential members.
Has BODYVIVE™ been trialled in clubs?
Yes, BODYVIVE™ has been trialled for six weeks in 12 clubs in the United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand. Feedback from the trial participants was gathered and reviewed for Les Mills by AC Nielsen. Fully 86% of responses from participants over 40 showed they would recommend, or strongly recommend BODYVIVE™ to others.
Has BODYVIVE™ been subject to expert review?

The cost to clubs will vary according to the pricing structure adopted by the regional agent or distributor.
What kind of support does Les Mills offer to licensed clubs?
Les Mills will train clubs’ BODYVIVE™ instructors and provide clubs with close support for launching the program. Clubs are given access to the Les Mills Group Fitness Management system for building profitability around the LES MILLS™ programs and are given free access to the Les Mills eClub – a vast library of marketing imagery and other resources contained in a secure section of the Les Mills website. Les Mills provides instructors with new program and education resources every three months and provides clubs with ongoing customer service support.
When can clubs acquire the program?
Les Mills trainers are currently being trained in BODYVIVE™ and will begin training instructors in late 2006. Clubs can launch BODYVIVE™ when their instructors are trained and their launch process is planned. The first clubs will launch BODYVIVE™ in early 2007.
When should clubs schedule classes?
Clubs should launch BODYVIVE™ in several different time slots to determine the most suitable scheduling time. Les Mills will also advise individual clubs on optimal scheduling, taking account of attendance patterns by likely BODYVIVE™ participants.
What’s in it for instructors?
Certification for BODYVIVE™ will give instructors additional credentials in the delivery of an integrated, low-impact program for adult participants and the opportunity to upskill in community-building and benefits-based coaching. It will also create new opportunities for more mature instructors.
How can instructors get trained?
Instructor training will be run in a similar way to the other Les Mills programs; ie by attending a three-day initial training module, then instructing as a trainee and submitting a video for assessment within 12 weeks. There will also be an oinline learning prerequisite on special populations and aging issues to support the initial training.
Do they need special skills?
Yes. Les Mills will provide instructors with the necessary understanding of the science and psychology of exercise for mature adults, as well as the required community-building and coaching skills. Instructors will need to be able to communicate easily with BODYVIVE™ participants and have a good sense of humour.
