Dear FV alumni: Below is your monthly update from Gwen Marshall. Please note that this is Gwen's last update. Soon you'll be hearing from her successor, Melissa Pauls. Our best wishes to Gwen! - Al Filreis

--------------------------------------------------------
AUGUST 2007

Hello Fellow Frost Valley Alumni!

Summer is over and all of the campers are headed off to school with a backpack full of memories of their adventures at Frost Valley. Ahh- to be young again! Hopefully, many of you have been following the stories, pictures and videos that Al Filreis has so skillfully presented to us through the blog that he began this summer. I encourage all of you to take some time to check it out. I can guarantee it will transport you back to camp.

The month of August has also brought change to Frost Valley. Lea Kone (Director of Development) announced that she has accepted a new position as the Associate Director of Camp North Star in Poland Spring, Maine. She left Frost Valley on September 7, after 5 years of holding several leadership positions both at camp and at the Montclair office. She takes with her many heartfelt memories of staff and friends but is excited to have the opportunity to pursue a dream of hers. We wish her well and she assures us that she will stay in touch with Frost Valley as a volunteer.

I have also announced my departure from Frost Valley. I will be leaving on September 28, and moving to Kansas City where my husband John has accepted the position of Executive Director of the Truman Medical Center Foundation. My time has been short with Frost Valley but our ties date back to the mid 1970's. We will continue to stay in touch and support Frost Valley into the future. But as I say "good-bye," Melissa Pauls says "hello".

Melissa has accepted the position of Alumni/Volunteer Coordinator and has been associated with Frost Valley since 2003. She is originally from Pawnee, Oklahoma. She began her career with FV as a lifeguard in the summer of 2003. She returned as Waterfront Director for 2 more summers and then returned this summer as assistant program director. She has done some backpacking through Europe and worked with the NY Mets. Please welcome Melissa, you will enjoy her infectious enthusiasm. Visit the blog at

KUDOS TO:

All of the Alumni/Volunteers that served as Ambassadors of Goodwill; meeting and greeting families were appreciated by so many. The Ambassadors assisted families with check-in, directing campers to their cabins, shared
stories about camp, and reassured those first-time parents/campers by explaining the mission of Frost Valley. This summer we also had Ambassadors at several of the bus locations assisting with the check-in and greeting the busses when they returned. We would like to extend our
appreciation to the following alumni/volunteers: Jodi Rossman, Ken Nathanson, Peter & Leslie Tilles, David Sacker, Diane Sacker, Fenn Putman, Lee Fleischer, Sandy Shairo-Bohn, Al Filreis, Peter & Martha Boyd, John Wellington, Bill Abbott, Sue & Steve Eisenhauer, Chris Vescio, Nikki Crighton, Milt Pittman, Stacy Williams-Green, Moira Poe, Dave Mager, Jessica Kaskel, and Wendy Warren. I also want to thank Katie Kelly for offering to help with the check-in at the Hempstead bus location, even
though each time we had to cancel the bus. If I missed any others that served as Ambassadors during camp I do apologize for not mentioning them, please be assured your help was appreciated.

WE RECENTLY HEARD FROM:
KATE LANDIS (1988-1999) After 8 years in the New York grind, Kate and her
husband Mike Loewengart decided it was time for a change. Kate quit her
job as a copywriter at an ad agency, Mike quit his job as an investment
banker and moved to Arlington, VA. They sound very happy getting settled
into their new surroundings. They welcome hearing from any Frost Valley
alums at kate.landis@gmail.com

ANDY WARE (1985-1995?) Is living in Westminster, VT with his wife Rachel
and their 2 children, Virginia (4½) and Lilly (1½). Andy shared a story
about running into Chris Mills unexpectedly when they were expecting their
first child Virginia. It turns out that Chris is a doctor now and was part
of the team that was going to deliver Andy and Rachel's daughter. What a
small world! Andy told us about how Frost Valley influenced his life and
his dream of developing a small horse/riding camp of his own so that he
can give back to another generation.

CHRISTINE MONAHAN (1977-1981) This summer assisted with the Japanese
program for two weeks as an ESL instructor. She really appreciated the
opportunity to be back which opened the flood gates of memories for her.

SYLVIE FLATOW (1992-2003) Contacted us about the wedding of her good camp
friends Mary Chopard and Noah O'Connor who recently got married in Mt.
Tremper at the Emerson Lodge (right next door to the world's largest
kaleidoscope). Frost Valley alumni Julian Bushman-Copp (Noah's cousin and
best man), Laura Mogulescu, Moira Poe, Anne Linder, Anne Brewer, Dan
Schorr, Jon Blum and Sarah Chapman were all in attendance and led the
crowd in an all-wedding hula hop. Since Mary and Noah met at camp, each
table was named after a Frost Valley Village. A great time was had by all!
You can see a picture from the wedding on the Blog
(http://frostvalleyalumni.blogspot.com/) when you click on the month of
August 2007.

SHERRIE HAJEK (1985-1988) Is now living in Tallahassee, FL and is working
for the Florida Department of Health where she helps fund research each
year for prevention, diagnoses, treatments, and cures for cancers and
tobacco-related diseases. The most exciting news of all is that she and
her partner are soon to be parents. Sherrie states that "life is
pretty-darned satisfying."

JACK (1995-) & MARCIA McMURPHY Marcia reports that life is good for them!
Jack has fully recovered from leukemia with a bone marrow transplant 3
years ago. They are back to their adventures: 300 miles of biking in
Michigan, 4 days of kayaking and 25 miles of in-line skating in 12 days.
Last summer Jack climbed another 14,000 foot peak in Colorado, hiked and
did some awesome mountain biking. He is celebrating his 23rd year of
teaching carpentry to juniors at a vocational school and enjoys it a lot.
Their son Travis, 22 returned from the University of Hawaii at Hilo after
21/2 years and is now attending Edinboro University in PA. Their second
son Brandon is 16 and plays football, basketball, baseball and keeps them
very busy with activities.

D'ARCY OAKS and his wife Heather visited/toured Frost Valley in July. Some
of their highlights included Bobby Eddings, Jeff Daley and D'Arcy singing
the "Little Ducky" song and observing the Hird campers playing "Ultimate
Sicko Ball" that D'Arcy and others developed back in the early 1990's.
D'Arcy said that he felt like a rock-star (while wearing his classic
early '70's FV shirt) leading the campers in the "Silence" cheer (which
they used to call "Knights and Maidens"). As they left FV D'Arcy reflected
that many of his personal characteristics which he is most proud of can be
traced to some extent to being a young person at Frost Valley. You can
read about his entire visit on the Blog at

http://frostvalleyalumni.blogspot.com/2007/07/origins-of-silence-ultimate-sicko-ball.html

OTHERS WHOM WE'VE HEARD FROM INCLUDE:

NANCY CAPLAN (1966-) trying to reconnect with Beth Krumholtz
JONELLE GULSTON (2004-2006) living in Brooklyn, NY
MATHEW MEYERS (1996) living in Minneapolis, MN
KIRK SWENSON (1984-1990) living in Victor, NY
JOANNA LESLIE (1997-2003) living in Middletown, CT
BERNADETTE DELANEY (1987-1988?) living in Richmond Hill, NY
MICHAEL LUCAS (1985-1987) living in Ames, Iowa

GEOFF HAZEL (1961-1967) see the article about Geogg on Al's Blog

I wish all of you well and will miss Frost Valley when I leave. However I take with me many wonderful memories and the spirit of FV which makes it a magical place for so many. Thank you so very much for your kindness and
support...until we meet again, Gwen
