NCA CANADA in TorontoコミュのENGLISH: UFC / Pride / K1 K -What?

You guys are Japanese. (Or at least you should be here on Mixi!!) so you know all about K-1 (remember Andy Fug?) and Pride (Mirko CroCop kick to-the-head).

What about the UFC, or Ultimate Fighting Championship? Do you know anything about that..? Well you should. Recently the UFC bought Japan's PRIDE Fighting Organization. Although PRIDE had a lot of financial trouble recently, even losing its deal with FUJI TV, it is still the most recognized MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) organization in Japan and all of Asia. UFC though is the most popular league here in North America and is quickly taking Europe by storm.

So, why is the UFC so great, and why is it getting so popular over here? The answer is fairly complex, but essentially it boils down to a few main points.

The Ultimate Fighter Reality TV Show:
5 seasons ago (about 2 1/2 years) the UFC debuted a new Reality TV show in which 10 wannabe (want-to-be) fighters join a training camp and live in the same house for 6 weeks. The fighters are divided into teams, captained by established UFC stars, and each week they fight in a tournament style to determine the winner (the Ultimate Fighter).

This recipe worked beautifully for this sport. SPIKE TV (see below) broadcasts the show every Thursday and the ratings have been very good. Allowing the general public to learn about MMA and become familiar with the different fighters and fighting styles.

SPIKE TV & UFC Unleashed:
At the same time as the Ultimate Fighter debuted, SPIKE TV also started showing matches from older UFCs each week on their cable network. Choosing exciting fights and exciting fighters this show complimented the Ultimate Fighter Reality program and drew in even more fans to the sport. This was the first time in North America that this type fighting has been allowed to be shown on Network or Cable television-- not just Pay Per View.

RULES and REGULATIONS:
One of the most critical factors in the UFC's success has been the introduction of set rules (kind of like Boxing) and regulations imposed by various states' (Nevada, California) sport regulation authorities. With rules, regulations and fighter's safety now strictly controlled-- including anti-drug policies-- MMA has been able to mature into a "real" sport, just like Boxing did over 90 years ago. With this new mainstream acceptance, UFC even reached a new milestone when it was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated for the first time ever; thereby cementing its status as an official sport and bringing mainstream media attention to what is now the fastest growing sport anywhere in the world.

Look for UFC Unleashed and The Ultimate Fighter on SPIKE TV on Wednesday nights.

Ultimate Fighter Reruns and The Fight Network (other MMA organization fights) on Rogers Sports Net

and tons and tons of UFC videos on YouTube.

Cheers guys
