Chemical ingredient reporting to retailers via the Global Data Synchronization Network
GMA/FPA has been working with Wal-Mart and the Consumer Specialty Products Association to promote a
Global Data Synchronization Network alternative to product ingredient information reporting to retailers.
The joint associations and GS1 US, the standards-making arm of GDSN, have identified the technical
processes to make this proposal workable. The next step is to garner volunteers from industry to work with
Wal-Mart and other retailers on the specifics of chemical ingredient reporting. This project began last May
when Wal-Mart initiated its Chemical Assessment Review Program. While Wal-Mart emphasized that it
would move forward with its CARP program, it agreed to work with the coalition to explore a GDSN-based
alternative that can provide a long-term, industry-wide solution. Wal-Mart remains actively engaged in the
process and has reached out to other retailers to join the effort. A work group of GMA/FPA, CSPA and
other industry association members is forming to work collaboratively with Wal-Mart and other retailers
on the initiative.
